Replacing throttle cables

I put on some Genmar riser spacers yesterday. When I was checking the throttle cable tension turning the bars each way, I found that turning full left, they were pretty tight, not affecting the throttle at all, but tighter than I'd want to leave them. . I also noticed there is a crack in the outer cable on the one cable. I'll order new cables and route them behind the triple tree.

Question about replacing them...do you have to remove the tank and air box? Just tilt the tank?

I can't remember what absolutely had to be removed to replace the cables, because last time I did it I had other reasons to have the tank and air box off anyway.  I didn't really like the idea of the cables behind the triple tree, so what I did was order and install an Interstate throttle housing/switch assembly.  This allowed the original routing of the cables.  The cables are the same for all three Valkyrie models.

I've never removed anything but the small side cover at the front of the tank. Before removing them, I always marked one cable end and the associated mount for it at the carb end to help ID which cable goes where. In your case, might not help since you're replacing them with new. What will help is get a strong piece of single strand large gauge wire, bend one end into a loop for a small handle, the other end into a hook. Use it to grab the lead plug on the ends of the cables to assist in seating the cable into the groove on the bottom end. That and 14" fingers really helps.

I would respectfully disagree.  Last year I had ordered some "valkyrie throttle cables" from Pinwall on ebay.  Turns out they were from an interstate and when I routed them through the cable stays on my standard, they wouldn't let me turn left.  Had to remove and installed ones for a standard.  Now no problems.

If you need a bit of slack for working, loosen the risers and slide the bars over left a bit.

Always pad the tank when loosening risers.

You're right, I see; different part numbers. I'm not sure how that wrong information got stuck in my head.

It is easier if you remove the two tank bolts and lift the front of tank and put a piece of 2x1 to keep the front propped up, more room for the hands to work and to fit the spanner in to tighten the nuts on the cable. Consider getting yourself an Interstate throttle body from Pinwall and with standard cables you can route them as now in front of the triple trees.

Fitted 2" Rox risers last week.
No matter where I rerouted the standard cables to i wasn't happy.
Tried going behind the shocks, but it tried to crimp the cable on right turn.

Had new cables made up 2.5" longer. (Maybe .5 too long)

Works good.
