Cleotis and Henry Earl are walking down the street in Atlanta, and they see a sign on a store which reads, “Suits $5.00 each, shirts $2.00 each, trousers $2.50 each. “ Cleotis says to his pal, “Henry Earl, look here! We could buy a whole gob of these, take ’em back to Sand Mountain, sell ‘em to our friends and make a fortune. Just let me do the talkin’ ’cause if they hear your accent, they might think we’re ignorant, and won’t wanna sell that stuff to us. Now, I’ll talk in a slow Georgia drawl so’s they don’t know we is from Alabama.” They go in and Cleotis says with his best fake Georgia drawl, “I’ll take 50 of them suits at $5.00 each, 100 of them there shirts at $2.00 each, 50 pairs of them there trousers at $2.50 each. I’ll back up my pickup and…” The owner of the shop interrupts, “Ya’ll from South Alabama, ain’t ya?” “Well…yeah,” says a surprised Cleotis. ”How come you knowed that?” “Because this is a dry cleaners.”

Sand Mountain is actually in northeastern Alabama... but it is a real area known for some of it's more 'socially primitive' customs still employed... For example, it is rumored that even the Episcopalians handle snakes... siblings marry each other... and 'proper' English is a 'second language'.
All just jokes, of course. Like so many others in other regions, they have become the butt of jokes. While it is very rural and somewhat isolated, that fact alone accounts for their subtle differences in views and actions. I've known many folks from that area, and I've found the folks themselves to be just fine and quite normal.
Your joke, too, is not at all unusual down here. I have family in Georgia, and they often tell 'Alabama' jokes... A thick skin is a good quality to possess, no matter where one lives...

P.S. Your joke is just fine, of course. I just thought I'd add 'The Rest of The Story'...

Hell, we even had jokes about people from different communities in Alaska. With a country this big, we are bound to have many differences. The joke does remind me of an incident I had in Alabama though. I flew to Tampa and bought my Interstate. On the ride back to Arizona, I stopped at a fast food joint for a bite. There were a group of construction workers having lunch also. I felt like I was in a foreign country. I could understand maybe 1/5 th of what they were saying. I just did a lot of nodding and smiling. Very nice guys though. I think anyway, they might of been calling me every name in the book.

When I posted this I was worried some might take wrong but being a Yankee kind of used to saying things taken wrong by my family living in the warmer states. You know the ones that visit down there and never go home.

Having been in every state in our fair Union I can attest to local dialects and the subtle differences in inflection and meaning. The largest single difference I noticed along with my first wife was from up North of Chicago to East Texas almost to Louisiana. THAT wuz one hell of an education ya might say! RIDE SAFE.

Ya'all down south have a funny accent, but when I was in Alabama they figured right away I came from WI, go figure? They say I had an accent that they figured was strictly from WI even though I think I have no accent.

I got the feeling these guys had been there their entire lives. I forget exactly where I was when I stopped, buts it's entirely possible they were from a neighboring state. Having been in the Navy, I'm not unused to different dialects and such but these guys were downright almost alien in their speech.

When I told my niece she had an accent , she replied " uncle Ross , we don't talk funny , yall just listed funny".
BTW , if two yallers get a divorce , are they still brother and sister.
It has been proven that tooth paste was invented in the south. Had it been invented in the north , it would have been teeth paste. Not my fault , you got me started. Only a yaller can tell you what a wookie taste like.
