My brother and I have been trying to figure out what is causing a backfiring condition from the right side of his engine for a couple of years now. The bike runs fine but backfires on decel and if you hold the RPMs at 3000 has a bad popping noise from the right bank. In fact when Chris and I drag raced neither bike gained on the other. (they are both 97s). We did the desmog hoping that would fix it. Nope. We tried several things afterwards. Checking for vacuum leaks, plugs to a name a couple. Always thinking whats left is fuel delivery. I called Dave "Dogg" Albrecht for advice. Ran the bike for him over the phone. He said it sounds like its running lean on the right side. Most likely plugged Pilot jets. I was afraid of that. That was last summer. So this Winter Chris and I removed the Carb bank. I disassembled all 6 carbs. Found nothing in the bowls. So I removed all the jets and soaked the in Carb cleaner for a week thinking this should do it. Chris got carb rebuilt kits for all. I rebuilt all 6 carbs with new seals and gaskets. Reassembled carbs with the newly cleaned jets. Reinstalled them in the bike. Problem is still present. DAMN. What did I miss. Called Dave again. He told me after checking several more things that he gave up trying  to clean the pilots because they are so small they never come clean. So on his advise we called Factory Pro in CA and got a jet kit. He recommended putting in bigger jets if Chris wants more power. So I removed the carb bowls again and replaced the Pilots jets with #38 (stock 35s)and the mains with #105s (stock 100s). Reassembled. NO more popping and the bike runs better then ever. Chris and I are very happy. Viola..ITS FIXED. Woo Hoo.... We will find out later today if Chris's bike is in fact faster than mine now.

A very big thanks goes out to Dave "Dogg" In Maryland for helping me out with problem. We owe you buddy. When It comes to making Valks run better he knows his stuff.

Oh and by the way I got a jet kit for my bike too. You see my brother CAN"T have a bike that is faster than mine.lol.

Good job on the fix and to those who assisted. Also, I learned first hand that popping in deceleration can also be from loose header nuts. After new crush washers are installed, they do have to be retightened once or twice after the bike is driven and they wear in.

+1 on the new jets, When I first got my Std I had what I call burbuling at steady low rpm cruising and slight decel pop, also needed healthy choke (enriching) even when 70° on first start.   I spent at least 30 min on each jet with a .035 mm  diesel fuel injector tip cleaning wire and did get them clean. It was like someone soldered them shut,  but would just buy new ones if I ever do it again.

Went for a ride with my brother, a tad over 50 miles.  The problem is completely sorted.  Good, smooth power delivery, seems like a little more hp.
Throttle response is improved.
A huge thank you to my brother Mark!

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.
