Two pretty informative articles to read while my arm is in a sling with a broken collarbone. i did not realize that slow speed maneuvering would account for such a large percentage of the total.
I was also surprised that having a passenger would be considered a way to decrease the chances of a CNC.
When you think about it, they both seem obvious thous...the first because nobody admits, if they dont have to, about dropping their bike and the other because we dont want our passengers to get hurt or pissed off by how we may be riding.
Thanks for those links

Thanks for posting this! I have read and studied the Hurt report several years ago and am glad that an updated study has been done.
Great information!

I observe from this that if asked to wear data recording equipment for a survey one should emphatically say no thereby minimizing the chance of having a crash or near crash.

I'd like to point out that where and when you ride is also a factor.  For example, my local group has seen TWO deer vs bike collisions  in TWO seasons.  This is within a group of 25-30 riders here in S.E. and central Michigan.

Some riders never see a deer where they live, I usually have an encounter requiring me to brake or slow down at least once a year.

Interesting study.  Would like to have seen more riders in the study.  In my opinion 100 is not a good enough numbers to get a good picture.  Nor is one up to one year of study.

I have always been leery of studies with small number of subjects.

I observe from this that if asked to wear data recording equipment for a survey one should emphatically say no thereby minimizing the chance of having a crash or near crash.

Seems to be a issue.  37 out of 100 crash.  Not good odds.

Pilots call it S A-situational awareness. Knowing precisely Where you are at every second you are riding/driving/flying. Guy that taught me to drive semi and move furniture said something to me a LONG time ago that has stuck. You Need to be aware and as fresh at hour 10 as you were the first minute you started driving that day. On my twisty roads here and others I've been on in a lot of different states my biggest fear/concern/worry especially on two lane is lane incursion of oncoming traffic.  Lips Sealed THAT will mess up an otherwise good day!. Other than Inzane and my P G R missions I now avoid large group rides. Just cuz they learnin don't Mean I gotta be there.  Roll Eyes And sometimes-well More than sometimes-it IS totally/completely out of our hands-kaka happens. RIDE SAFE. P S if you go past 10 hrs stay fresh!  2funny
