Interested to hear what kind of bandwidth for cost we are seeing around the country, also are you rural or urban.

I'll start with, theoretically 4096k down, 640k up, DSL, $31 for the data portion, with Centurylink. Actual net bandwidth is much less. They have a monopoly here and so speed is bad for too much money.  I've found, w/o any broadband competition, our choice is slightly better speed (up to about 15Mb though Hughes claims 25Mb though with poor latency - and I doubt that speed) with very poor data volume (like 10GB / mo - looking at Verizon pkgs - I'll use that up in a day even at my snail speed)  at high cost ( $40-50 / mo., it goes up FAST if you raise the volume much) via satellite or 4G LTE connection, vs. unlimited data volume at very poor speed and also too high cost for what they deliver - Centurylink - the only service via landline here, which is twisted pair.  We used to get 7,000kb down per the modem's connection status page, actually yielded about 3.3Mb on speedtest.net. Right now Speedtest reports 95ms on ping, 1.11Mbps / 0.12mbps after Centurylink decided they were providing too much service and throttled us to 4.096/0.640.

The speed is so slow the wife has been forced to stop telecommuting and go back to the office as she can't even do VOIP over this abysmal bandwidth.

I SO want to give them the finger but they have me in the barrel and they know it.

Spectrum

Download fluctuates  10.5 - 44.6 mbs
Upload 7.6 - 9.2 mbs

$64.99 a month and they are the only provider with decent speed in my neighborhood.

I used this to get results

ATT 1.8 meg download, 220K upload.
Slow and unreliable all for just $54.

What a rip off, only choice - rural.  And they are not taking new customers in this area.

Spectrum (Charter (used to be Timewarner cable)) - 100 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up. $60.00/month.  he competition is Centurylink DSL, last time I had that it was only 3M down 640K up. My county is definately rural / suburban, but we are 20 miles from Raleigh.  Centurylink keeps saying they got faster now, but I'm not so sure - when I was on DSL, our nearest DSLAM was 15,000 cable-feet from my house.

Frontier (Formerly Verizon) FIOS, 70MBPS both directions, business class with US based support, no blocked ports, written permission to run servers, and a block of 5 static IP addresses that are fully mine for $120 a month.

Suburbs of Dallas, kinda urban that remembers being rural. (I have horse pastures within a mile of me but can be in downtown Dallas in 20 minutes.)

Mark, I routinely get around 90MB download and 12mb upload as the link will show. I guess that's one advantage to living in the Chicagoland area. Not much else is a plus living here.

I have bundled Cable, Internet and Phone. I pay 155 a month for all three with Comcast. I've tried to drop the phone and save some money but Comcast tells me to go from "Triple Play" to "Double Play" by dropping my phone, my bill will go UP. Go figure. I could opt for a faster Internet speed which would put me over a 100mb/s for about 10 bucks a month more but I don't really see the need. And that's still residential service.

I think if I wanted Internet alone, it would be in the range of 50/month.  I pay a lot for service through Comcast but can't complain about the product.

If I opted for business class, my speeds would be up to 150Mb/sec.

around 5-8 meg and .50 (1/2 meg) is all with TDS (telephone data system) ONLY one in my area for around 32 bucks a month.  10 bucks more for 15 megs but good enough for my needs

do NOT do HUGHES NET satellite internet.  been there, done that,  once you run out of 50 gb data plan per month if you stream any video or watch movies/netflix on low def (high def will burn 50gb up in days), 50 gb might be gone in 1 month and then they claim you will still get 1 meg service, but runs like dial up VERY slow and cannot even watch you tube videos once runs out of data plan GBs.

ONLY time I ran out of 50gb with hughesnet satellite is with 2 kids at home summer months not in school watching netflix all the time.

There you go, all for $67 plus taxes a month. Where is that fiber optic trunk line between Chicago and Milwaukee? Oh that’s right, 1 mile west of my house here in the suburban utopia of big bucks for poor service (and not just AT&T). I pay for 24Mbps but seldom have it and constant interruptions of service make watching Netflix and Hulu an adventure.

Charter/Spectrum - 60 mbs down load around 10 mbs up.   Running around $59/month with TV combo.  Sure better than DSL with Century Link.
