I'm in the process of doing a custom job on an old GSXR 400.

While looking for inspiration I came across hydrographics which really interested me, so I decided to "dip" a few parts of the GSXR.

On my valk, my cam end covers are starting to peel. I have some spare ones which were not chromed and in pretty poor condition.
I thought I'd dip the spare ones and fit them while the others are away being re-chromed.

Here's the end caps after dipping and clear coat. A couple of pics of the GSXR forks and fork brace.

I'll be dipping the whole frame at the weekend.

That looks pretty cool. Me and my youngest son looked at that last year but never did it.

Stan, in NJ, has a beautiful Interstate with parts of the fairing, trunk, and bags "dipped" and it looks terrific.  One of the nicest Valkyries I have seen in 15 years.

We need pictures of the other bikes referenced.  Also, what does it cost to get set up to do this?

100 bucks for a kit and a tub big enough to dip whatever you are dipping into it. Rubbermaid totes work great for smaller parts.

Hmmm....you just gave me an idea instead of painting the fenders and side covers on my old GL1200 project. When you sprayed it with clear, is it just a one step process or does it have to be sanded and buffed to get the shine?

There is technique involved.  It can sometimes come out wavey if you blink to hard.

It is a film, kimda like window tint you cut and lay on top of the water. You then spray ot with an activator that turns it liquid. Start by holding what you want dipped at an angle and rotate it as you dip. Once it is dipped you shake it under the water and pull it out. Pretty easy. I suggest practicing on things that don't matter. You tube hydrodipping and you will find tons of videos on it. I became an expert over night  Cheesy

I always use 2 pack clear coat, it gives a better shine than the single pack.
It can be sanded and polished to get an even better shine if needed or wanted. The items I sprayed this morning have not been polished.

Pitbull, can you be a bit more specific about what you mean....2 pack. Is there a brand name involved I could reference? Obviously I'm no painter.  Wink

I'm no painter either. But I think he's referring to what we call a 2 part clear coat, where you mix in the hardener. (Them English speak funny)  2funny cooldude

Gary and Gig

Thanks for the compliments on my Interstate. For those interested I posted pics on Facebook VRCC Group. Bike has hydrographic carbon fiber and custom red pearl paint.

I tried for over an hour to post pics from my phone to Photobucket, couldn't get it done

Meathead is correct John, us English do speak funny Grin

What we called 2 pack or 2k clear coat is where the clear coat is mixed with the hardener, usually at a 2 to 1 ratio.

It's a bit hit and miss when first using a proper spray gun getting the settings right and easy to make a right mess of things.

I'm pretty sure you can get "2 part" clear coat in a rattle can where the can is in two sections, you have to do something to the bottom of the can to mixed the contents.

Found some here for you

The reviews look pretty good.

Here's a video, this guy does some of the best video's on YouTube. It was watching him that gave me the urge to custom paint an old bike.

Stan, I always thought the pics I had seen of your bike were pretty cool. But sitting there parked right next to me, it was simply stunning.  cooldude I'm assuming they do the dip first and then tape it off for the paint ?

Rob,

Yes my painter insisted that the dip should be on fresh (less than 24 hours) paint. After taping and painting the area Black in my case, he would dip on the graphic. Then have to tape off in order to paint the red. Countless hours on his part but it was his idea. LOL

It was my pleasure to post the pics, Stan and share your beautiful bike.

And I'd say you picked the right painter. He did an awesome job. And that shade of Red is spectacular!
