A while back I posed the question...is there a match for the metallic gunmetal(?) grey pinstripe...so I went to an auto paint mixing place and got what I thought was the closest color...It was a disappointment on 2 fronts...first the color was a little off and showed a lot under full sun...second, trying to get it flush with the stripe was next to impossible.
So...the next question...is there dupli-color car match that I could use to mask off and spray over the stripe...as I plan to re-clear the whole tank after with "Spray Max 2K Gloss". (got some fine scratches that would fill in nicely with a tank respray and 4000 wet sand and polish)

I could not remember when I first read your post.  3M , makes rolls of pinstripe tape. I went to a color supply and they matched the color and did a stock order. It was the orange and so close you really had to stare to see the difference. I recommended this to a couple others and they had good results.

The damage is on the lower stripe left side mid tank and right down to the red paint under the stripe about 1/4" long so it needs to be filled first...I tried that with multiple layers of the touchup paint with poor results. -Adding a stripe over top is going to show without re-striping the whole tank...which may be the unfortunate end result I'm afraid.
That is why I would like to attempt a spray paint touch-up, but need a good color match and unfortunately pinstripes are too thin to get a good read with a paint match tool.
I may go back to the paint mix shop and see if they can do a little better sample match and have them mix up a rattle can for me.
I already have the "Spray Max 2K" to re-clear the tank.

Funny, the tank pinstripes are obsolete but not the fender pinstripes.

Probably because at 140 dollars a side nobody was buying.
I will try one last shot with the auto duplicolor match at an auto parts shop that trusts me enough to let me carrying a few cans out to the bike to have a look.(Canadian Tire said no... even when I offered to leave my Credit Card at the counter with the bike in full view outside the door.???)

You might try filling with the clear and building it up, and knocking it down.    Most any sign shop can cut the stripes for you. Cast High Performance film is very thin and opaque. If I had a sample, I'd be glad to do it for you. After you build it up you could lay a piece in, if it matches well, I don't think you would notice after you clear the whole tank.

I was at a custom auto graphics shop and the gal who has done their pin striping for years("Pam The Pinstriper") came out and had a look and said that there was nothing that she could splice into the damaged spot that would come close enough...she suggested the paint mix shop to try touch-up paint but did not sound too positive about a good result...and as it turned out she was right.
I either re-stripe the whole tank or mask and apply a color matched spray paint...sucks but it is what it is.

She's probably never done a touch up.

She's probably never done a touch up where the stripe is under several clearcoats of 16 year old paint with an unknown factory color....succesfully!
