May 24th I will have a right hip replacement. It is an anterior. I like the Dr. Told him I ride and he said no reason to stop. He rode dirt bikes and wants to ride a road bike , so I will talk to him when I see him next. He said I will be walking the same day and should be back on the bike in two weeks. There is a packing he uses and no stitches or staples. He glues the incision shut.  I hope it goes as easy as he says. He is a teaching doctor  ,and does several a day.

All the best Ross on your upcoming surgery. Hope all goes well and we will see you at IZ. We can't be down two Patterson brothers in one year.   Sad

Ross, good for you on the Anterior method, fast recovery. Took my dr. about 2 hrs., was back in the room at 2:30pm, walked to the bathroom w/o assistance at 4:30. For the next couple days, all new joint patients had an exercise class twice a day which really paid off. It takes a few weeks for all the internal discomfort to leave, I used some pain killers for three days after discharge and was only half a pill if needed. The muscles get stretched so they sometimes felt like I had simply worked out too hard at the gym. A friend had his done using only glue, my dr. used staples on me. When asked about why, he said if a person is fairly heavily muscled in that area it sometimes is safer to use staples, took them out at ten days. My dr. was also a teaching dr. and a big goof ball, we got along great.   Grin

Amazing what they do now. Make sure he doesn't get careless with the glue. Good luck!

Hey Ross,  I just had my left hip done, Dr. used glue and tape, no stitches, no problems.  It's been a month now and I'm walking almost a mile and doing yard work with no issues. weather has been kinda crappy, so I haven't missed riding too much, but the next nice day I'm gonna give it a whirl!

Now THAT's a terrific pearl of wisdom.  I would add stretching as well to the presurgery routine.

I had the right hip done and it wasn't too bad.  The left hip is a little tricky to pivot on when mounting.
If your bike has a driver back rest you might not be able to swing your leg over it. Check your clearance.
Good luck!!

Grin  I have no idea about Ross's keester, but(punny) when the Anterior method is used they don't go anywhere near the butt muscles. That's the old posterior method and involves cutting that muscle. I have a 4" scar on the front of my hip right below where your hip bone sticks out. On me, after 10 days they removed the staples, ran a line of glue down the cut and laid a bunch of butterfly tapes over it, looked like Scotch tape. Over the next couple weeks it just sorta disintegrated in the shower. My neighbor had his done the old way, took him weeks to get back to walking the dog without at least having a cane. The week after surgery I was walking with my wife, she was using the walker, I had nothing in my hand. The neighbor happened to see it and just knew I hadn't had a full replacement because you just don't recover that fast. I showed him my xrays, no more talking about it then.  Wink

Good luck on your surgery, Ross. I'll say a prayer for you. I don't know if it's too aggressive of a timetable that you'll be able to make Inzane but I sure hope to see you there.

Ross, at my age if some poor lost soul wants to check out my scar, they're welcome to it. My dignity about such things went out the door five years ago while recovering from a heart attack.  Grin

I have three friends that have had it done.......two gals one guy.
The guy is ready to play hockey again, can't tell he ever had it done  cooldude.
One of the gals had a tough time at first but stuck to the exercise routine she was given and is doing fine now, ready to golf.  Cool
The second gal is having a re-do and not by the same DR. She has been using a cane ever since.

Not all DR's are equal.   ???
