I think I've done 6 or 7 brake pad replacements on Valkyries . I've never had a problem removing the screwdriver slotted pin cover. Well, had to repair a tire recently and noticed I needed rear pads. I usually 2 or 3 sets on hand, I think no problem. First mistake not putting the caliper back in place before trying to remove it. Second mistake was.....well, you know. I buggered up the slot. So I end up getting it out with an easy out and taking the one off my standard to replace it. I figured some of the bike shops would have some in stock, but no go. Couldn't find anything at the hardware stores either. Ended up ordering these.
  I ordered the black steel ones but they were out of stock and they sent me stainless. I went ahead and got 10. Later I noticed they had some set screws of the correct size for 1/3 of these. Anyway I figured Allen head would be better.

I was looking at the BelMetric stuff as well and they have a great product. I  dropped $100 a month or so ago for some stainless hardware from them.

IIRC, when I looked at them then, the SS screw height was 10mm vs. the original ones @ 5mm. Is the extra 5mm an issue, or does it thread down enough?

I'm not sure what you are referring to when you said they had set screws that were 1/3 of the ones you got. Looks like you got set screws..... Am I missing something? I like the flat vs. the regular cup point on the ones you got.

Yeah Jim, they stand a little proud. But I don't think it matters. After I ordered these, which are called "metric drain plugs" for $1.45 I saw some called "set screws" for $.45.

In the past I've used a little moly60 with good effect. After this I bought a tube of actual anti-seize. It was probably mostly because I removed the caliper first. It's hard to get a solid bite like that. Also, I don't use the back brake that hard. The pads had 40k and 3 years on them.

I don't think this is the same thing as a set screw. It has a drain plug head as the top part of the set screw. This would put the drain plug even further outside the threaded hole. What am I missing?

It is close. It looks like 8mm of thread. Overall 11mm. It will work. cooldude The ones I got probably have 3 or 4mm proud of the caliper. It might not go flush, but it will probably look better.

It would be easy enough to remove 2mm of thread with a belt sander or grinding wheel.
