Do Your Best and Miss the Rest!

Yorkville, Illinois

« on: May 13, 2017, 06:03:07 PM »

My oldest daughter was at the Delnor Hospital Fitness Center today with our 3 grandkids when an escorted prisoner knocked out a corrections officer and took his gun. He then took a hospital worker hostage.

My daughter is an X Ray tech at Delnor and closely works with ER, where this all unfolded but she wasn't working today. Even though she was just a couple hundred feet away across the street, the Fitness Center where she was also went on lockdown. A SWAT team was called in and negotiations broke down eventually.

That's when the SWAT team performed their duties like they usually do all too well.

No more bad guy but a little too close for comfort. The hostage(employee) was unhurt but very shaken.

Damn ! Did your grandkids know what was going on Russ ? Must have been very scary for your daughter. It's one thing to have your own life in danger, but to have your 3 kids also in danger would be very stressful.

We were coming back from Wisconsin when we got a call from my daughter who started out, "We're ok, but...."
My daughter didn't tell my grandkids, 7, 5, and 2 what was going on. She told them it was a hospital drill--which it kinda was. I just thought it was weird when they were on lockdown across the street when it was known the prisoner and hostage were in a small room in ER. I would have thought it'd be safer just to let them get out of there before it escalated.

We were monitoring it on whatever medium there was---news, Facebook, etc.

Thanks, Rob.

After negotiations broke down, the decision was made to storm the small room...pretty gutsy.

I agree with the laxness that allowed the prisoner to get the gun, Jess. But I guess the prisoner had been there for a week to 10 days.
The "problem" is that the County Jails don't have medical facilities on a large scale. Anything above minor treatment necessitates sending the inmates to a hospital. And that puts innocent employees at risk, even if they are escorted.

I can't answer why he wasn't in restraints/cuffs but had that same question myself.

Yes, ty.. she does. And after it was all over and she was home, I commented that it's a good thing my 7 yr old grandson didn't get turned loose on the hostage taker. He's been taking Tae Kwon Do for about 4 months now. I said, "Beckham woulda Tae Kwon Do'ed him into submission!"

My daughter replied, "Either that or would have bowed repeatedly while saying Thank You, Master".  I thought that was kinda cute.

Glad everyone made it out safe and no one was hurt (the prisoner is just an animal to me, so he doesn't count).

Also, a very special Happy Mother's Day to your daughter!

Russ-Happy Mommys day to your S O. Am Happy beyond belief that Your FAMILY Is O K. Also Happy that S W A Ts decision worked like it needed too. I'm thinking if ANY prisoner needs attention outside the cell block the S O P needs to be revisited and revamped and updated. Leg irons and those really huge wrist restraints. BEHIND their back. Let em bitch-They ARE Prisoners. Again-Happy Daughter and Grandkids suffered no physical harm. RIDE SAFE.

Thanks, Dennis. I couldn't agree more about SOP needing review. This outcome could have been worse and I'm sure it's not an isolated case across America.

Russ,

Glad your family is ok.  Nothing more important.

Sounds like the guard needs a refresher course on keeping him/her weapon.

My wife works at Good Sam in Downers and oldest son works at Illinois Masonic
in Chicago. I sure all hospitals will go thru drills after this for that exact scenario.

My youngest  is on the SWAT team for Niles.

Thanks, Popeye. We were just over at my daughter's house for Mother's Day. I don't know what the answer is, but Allison stated she has to routinely Xray these prisoners. She said they can't be wearing handcuffs/shackles for the Xrays to turn out. So....the Correction's officer sometimes isn't even in the immediate Xray area due to them not wanting radiation exposure. I can really see where there's a potential for an attempted escape/assault situation right there. I hope, like you said, something does come out of this incident that makes it safer for the hospital staff.

Russ, I think the solution is an ankle or neck lock with a small shaped charge.  If they misbehave, you blow their leg or head off.  If they want to get medical attention outside lockup, they have to sign a waiver and release for the lock, or they don't get any outside treatment.

Instead of a shaped charge, it could just be a half million volts of electricity, but I like the shaped charge better.

Remember, Snake Plissken had to wear one on his wrist.   Smiley

You might be on to something, Jess. My neighbors have two dogs, a shephard and a boston bulldog. They're good dogs and I always go up to our chainlink fence and greet them. They're so happy for attention, they bark like crazy while I'm petting them. It doesn't bother me but my neighbor gets out the shock collars. As he slips it on them, it's nary a peep out of either one of them. The transformation is incredible. We just have to adapt that...so these prisoners wear a taser strength collar or ankle bracelet. The explosive idea could be a little dangerous for the staff also...but I like the way you think!  Evil

Neck collar don't gotta be explosive! ALL it gotta do is SQUEEZE. Might take a bit longer but with no reversing it-the outcome IS guaranteed.  Evil Long time ago I unloaded surplus butter at a prison. I needed an escort to use the facilities. Talked with one of the Guards. He told me the ones unloading my truck were the trustees. I said they looked like they could chew glass with no injury to themselves. He replied-ya oughta see the ones we have on lock down 23 and a half hours a day. A prisoner knocked on my door to let me know I was empty. He took a step away from my truck and a guard laid the billy club to him. Guard told me prisoners aren't allowed to touch the truck. They had to carry the prisoner the guard beat. He-the prisoner-was leaking a lot of blood. Huntsville Texas was the prison I unloaded at. RIDE SAFE.

There must be non-metallic restraints that will work during scans, x-rays, etc.  Or some kind of sedative that makes them less of a risk.

I don't know what there policy is. But when we pulled hospital duty it was always two officers with one inmate. And at all times the inmates is wearing shackles, waist belt and handcuffs that slip through a d ring with said inmate wearing bracelets .

When the Docs were doing there surgeries  the inmate was in a two point restraint. Meaning a arm and a leg was shackle to the his bed. If we did remove them that said inmate was totally under sedation during surgery. At all times there was an officer in the operating room with him an one was posted outside the door. That inside officer had to scrub down like the rest of the hospital staff and wear scrubs inside the operating room with that staff. Both officers are arm at all times. Hospital staff didn't like it but we weren't dealing with petty shop lifters.

When they came to this big house. We didn't play. Suck for them as they were Locke down 23/7 but they earned that trip to this big house....nuff said

Hopefully, after review and changes, the new policy for Kane County will be very similar to the standards you went by.  Thanks for your post.
