Ben (my son) is 10. He's not fully committed to wrestling. But he doesn't HAVE to be. He sort of loafed thru the season this past year. going to 60% or so of the club practices. And I could not get him to go to very many of the academy practices. His partner availability in the club is very poor. The academy is kick ass, but it's pay to play and hard.
Long story short... he wrestled in two local tournaments for a record of 4-2 on the season. Then went to the State Tournament after cutting weight from 126 to 117 (to wrestle 120). He did it ALL on his own, by ONLY giving up junk. The little SOB went one won the cursed thing! Makes me proud, but does not deliver the hard work lesson I wanted him to learn. He beat a kid that was 15-0 coming into his match vs Ben. And really SHOULD have beat him. But Ben wrestled smart... beat the kid 2-0. Then went on to win in the finals vs a kid that had pinned him 2 weeks prior, beating him 12-1 with the ONLY point he gave up on the day a locked hands penalty! Tough to lose when you don't give up ANY points.
Then... he just didn't even want to try to go onto win the triple crown. (State titles in each of three wrestling styles.) he did triple crown two years ago. And he luke warm about wrestling next year at all.
I am not gonna push him. I don't want to be THAT Dad that pushes his kid to do sports and make him HATE it. Wrestling is HARD. His confidence is really good. It's helped him in football a lot. He LOVES football.
Now that I can ride... it's raining EVERY day.

Thanks for asking Dog.
See ya.
