So I'm at the dentist (one of my least favorite things to do in the whole world).  He's giving me the bad news about a couple molars that may not be savable, and how much fun we'll be having drilling and grinding, with big shots of tasty Novocain, and pulling and implanting (and I'm thinking about my bank account).

He pokes his little pick into a live nerve and my eyes shoot open and I go straight as a board, and he says....... is that a little uncomfortable?   :o

Yeah, it's uncomfortable....... like a swift kick in the nuts is uncomfortable.    :crazy2:

I need those molars, so whatever it takes.  It's just money and pain... and aggravation.

yeah   I feel your pain

gettin the stitches out from 3 extractions-implants tomorrow morning

Gonna save the oxy..........  never had bad pain after the surgeries
and you never know when you may need it down the line  motrin was all it needed

If dentist says you need gum work then a root canal for a molar with no promises about the tooth breaking do what I did and just pull and get implant

Cant get another cavity once its gone   :-[

I HATE going to the dentist !!!! I'm  now missing double digits in number of teeth . Alot of it was having too small a mouth and normal size teeth.

Couldn't afford implants, so on the lower right (with NO molars left now) I have a partial denture. I don't have too much problem with food at the partial itself, but over o on the other side - it gets packed with food particles. I hate that partial so much that rather than having number 3 extracted (and adding another partial for the top right), I elected to goto a specialist to re-do a crown. Since it had already had a rootcanal (that one took a novocaine shot in the roof of my mouth  - YES I'll talk what do you want to know !!!!!!!) , the redo wasn't too bad.

And that's just my latest....

Yeah Ron.  Roughly speaking a root canal and cap is $1500.  An implant is closer to $5K.  I've had plenty of root canals and caps that have given good service for many years.

However, I had the fun of a root canal and cap, only to lose the tooth entirely to infection less than one year later.  I was not very happy to have it pulled AFTER spending $1500 on it first.  And make no mistake, I take very good care of my teeth and gums, daily.

Now I have a bit of a conundrum.  I like my dentist OK, and he seems like a straight shooter, but I don't really know him.  With the work and expense he proposes, I really feel like a 2d opinion.

Everybody who understands a dental Xray, raise your hands.  It's a blur of greys, and when he points to stuff and says this is the bad part, you have no idea if it's the straight scoop, or he just needs help paying alimony and putting his kids through college.

I hate to be such a skeptic about human behavior, but I am.

My Fiancee is Romanian, Every couple of years she goes to visit family, and gets some work done while there. I went with her last year, and had some stuff done while I was there. The dentist was as good, if not better, than any I have seen in the states. Plus she was HOT. The equipment was as state of the art as anything we have here.
I had a hell of a 2hr cleaning, had 2 bad teeth pulled and a filling, cost me $125.00. The full Panoflex X-ray was $3.00. Here in the states just to walk in the office and have that X-ray done is several hundred bucks.
She had 2 root canals and caps done, $75.00 a tooth.
It is cheaper to fly over there every 2yrs and have a 2 week vacation while getting dental work done, than going to a dentist here.

I changed dentists 10 yrs ago when I learned he had been doing unnecessary work. I then found out he had just bought a house on Nantucket, some of the priciest real estate in the Northeast. Not happy.

I don't mind going to the dentist at all. I've had the same dentist all my life, except when
I was little, then it was his daddy. My father and his father were pals when they were
little (before WWII). My dentist's son is now a dentist, they share a practice, so
I'll probably never have another dentist.

When I was little their office was in the now-demolished SCN building in Greenville,
my father did the gold leaf lettering on the door to their office, that door is
now a door in the "new" office, I like going back to look at it every time I'm there.

Come on down for a visit.  :cooldude: We have a Border Town that's whole purpose is dental work and pharmaceuticals. Algodones. I haven't had anything done there except for an examination, but my In-Laws both have and many others I know. I think implants run between $750- $1000. 5 billion Snowbirds can't be wrong. :2funny: actually as far as Algodones goes, I've only heard a couple negative interactions. 99% of them seem to be pretty happy with the work and the prices.

IF the work needs done to this extent, I would have to have bone implants and wait 8 months or so for it to take, and several appointments thereafter.

I wouldn't care for multiple trips out there, and I'm not moving out there.

But thanks.

2d opinion in the works, locally.

Reminds me of a story.
Guy goes to a female dentist and she informs him he has to have some cavity's filled.
Comes in with a needle and novacane and he stops her,, says he can't stand needles.
So she comes back with a gas mask, He stops her ,, says he can't stand gas,, makes him sick.
So she leaves,, comes back with 2 blue pills,, and he says,, yep,,that I can do.
After he takes them he asks what they were?
She says "Viagra"
He says,, I did not know Viagra stopped pain?
She says it doesn't,, but it will give you something to hang on to when I drill your tooth!

Sounds like 'Carla Tortelli' from Cheers...  She did a very similar thing in one episode  ;D

speaking of dentist,  had to take 18 year old daughter to oral surgeon to get wisdom teeth out today.  GOT some GREAT videos AFTER of her mumbling jibberish laughing our keesters off, VERY FUNNY!!! :2funny:

I will keep laughing until the BILL COMES soon enough.  2 teeth extracted estimate of 1500 while all 4 around 3 grand - OUCH!  that will hurt in the old pocketbook... :'(

I can honestly say they have made DRASTIC improvements on recovery time.  I remember 30 years ago when my wisdom teeth were taken out spitted up blood for 2 days and in misery.  Daughter today after the loopiness wore off,  she is doing pretty well no pain and not much blood much to our surprise.  Will see how tomorrow goes?

Kidd

That's right ,,  we go there for my  asthma meds  and codine and my wife has had some very good dental work there  , crowns and fillings  , so have our friends

I question this , maybe you got really really lucky  with a  dentist , my   wife is from Russia , been here for 8 years , we have talked about dentist with her many friends  ,so I feel I do know about dentist in the soviet union and they are among   the worst  on Earth , completely uncaring  .
I know  the SU is gone but little has changed in dentistry
