... is the place for me.

I charged the battery a month or so ago, and have run the bush hog several times this year. Today
the tractor didn't even try to start. It is a six volt system, my multimeter said the
battery was doing about 3.5 volts. I went four places before I found a replacement,
Tractor Supply had it. I put on a new manifold gasket a month ago too, it had
begun to POP POP POP when I was running the tractor last year... I hadn't had to run the bush hog
since last June because of last summer's drought... crossing my fingers for
no drought this year, I'd rather run the bush hog every day than have flash
fire conditions again... it was crispy brown acres last year...

Cool! I used to operate an 8N. Converted it to 12 volt, alternator instead of generator etc. Bullet proof tractors, need to run em even if there is no grass!

My tractor is the kind everyone got when they got back from WWII... it's bullet-proof,
just like Firefighter says... but Steamer's modern Kubota kicks my tractors ass... he
can do all kinds of things, reliably... I can pretty much run the bush hog, as long as
the battery stays charged and the manifold gasket holds. I put a $100 Chinese radiator
in it two summers ago, the old one finally gave up the ghost. The tractor belched out
a half a quart of antifreeze when I turned it off today, it didn't use to do that...

Good old tractor. As a kid I racked up a few hundred hours bouncing around on that steel seat. The summer heat would make your butt burn where the cheeks rubbed together after a number of hours on it. Everyone laughed at me when I dug up some old padding, forerunner of foam, cut a bunch of holes in it and shaped it to match the seat. Then started carrying a box of corn starch with me, would powder my butt with it by dropping my pants while out in the back forty where only the foxes and deer could watch. Took care of the butt burn.  cooldude

I take it that this is a Hoyt-Clagwell tractor.  Heard he made pretty good plastic fruit after his tractor business tanked, at least according to Sam Drucker.

Why not change over to 12 volt ? That's like running a Valkyrie on a AAA..... Call the motel in Pikeville .

Rooms are still available at ground zero for next year . Dates are Friday 5-25-18 and Saturday 5-26-18 ....( You " MUST " tell the motel you are with The Hillbilly Ride ) to get our rate and the motel worked with us not renting rooms to anyone that didn't say Hillbilly Highway .

My 8N is kind of scary in 4th gear in a bumpy field. Imagine that
one in 5th!

I've known several who have gone to 8 volt. won't cook ignition, whips it right over, charges fine and only cost is battery. (provided everything else is as it should be).

There was a good tractor place in town until just a few years ago. The guy came
out here and got my tractor and broke it in two and put in a new clutch and changed
out the ring gear that the starter turns (it was slap wore out) and a few other
non-cosmetic things... he asked me if I wanted him to change it over to 12 volt and
I said no, I probably messed up there...

-Mike "is it animated?"

Nope

I didn't think anyone would see that  Smiley ... I removed it already...

It is animated for me on firefox on linux... it is just a "broken picture" icon on chrome... I noticed
a while back that sometimes when I park my bike without remembering to turn off the camera,
I end up with stuff I can turn into a gif animation. Gif animations don't work well when uploaded
to google sites, or any other google service I've tried, including youtube... when I had access to
web space directly on an Internet connected machine with an apache web server on it, gif animations
worked great. That picture is pretty cool when the water is moving... it might animate if you click
on it? ... anywho... it is no fun to put them in posts if they aren't animated without the viewer having
to do something special...

Depending on how fast your Internet is (I have slow DSL) you might have to wait
a few seconds (not a minute or anything)... a gif animation is numerous whole
pictures melded together, all of them have to load before the animation starts
moving...

The Farmall M Dad had while I was growing up had the 8 volt battery.  It is a 6 volt system, with a 8 volt battery.  You can still find them.  He said it turned the engine over faster than the 6 volt when cranking, making starting easier.  Since only the battery was 8 v, the system worked great.
