Apple iOS 11 has a very useful safety called Do Not Disturb While Driving. This feature helps drivers stay focused on the road by automatically silencing notifications. And you can send auto-replies to your contacts in your Favorites so that they know you are driving.

Finally some help in the texting while driving mode from Apple. There was a post that talked about new rules from NY to inspect your phone if you got pulled over or in an accident and I wonder if this feature could be used to tell what you were doing while driving if you dont have it turned off? Its still voluntary for now and Im sure that text queen will not use it but at least its a start.

Ya think most tech-dependent drivers will have the common sense to use the feature?

I don't.

At least it EXISTS now.  Makes it a small step to mandate it's implementation legally.  (Recall, the existence of "smart gun" tech was vigorously defeated by the "gun lobby" because everyone knows, once a tech exists lawmakers rush to mandate it.) Then carry it further so it DISABLES texting - while ensuring that firmware releases cannot defeat it by making it hardware implemented - no access to the code via firmware upgrades.

A automatically disable features would be good for the driver,  BUT what about the passenger?   How would the phones in the vehicle be able to tell who is driving and who is a passenger?

The best deterrent to texting while driving is the user.  Just say NO.

RFID technology.  Most cars already have that installed for pushbutton starting.  They just need a couple more RFID antennas inside, and the small computer control with firmware that triangulates where the phone is.  Driver's seat and the car is rolling - DISABLED.  Except for 911.

RFID doesn't really work like that. What gets closest to what you are describing is bluetooth beacon technology, and then you'd have to have your car rigged in such a way that you'd need beacons all around you. It wouldn't be practical, would be inaccurate and expensive. On top of that there would be no way of knowing that the phone that is charging in the center of your dashboard is operated by the person that is driving the car or sitting in the passenger's seat. If you'd like to do this you could use technology thats been around for a while and use image recognition to see if the person operating the phone is in the drivers seat or not. Even better would be to not use the phone's camera but have a camera inside the car that detects this as to not drain your phones battery life and have a better angle.

My personal opinion: you don't have to fear that the government will force you into using a stricter form of this. Its already illegal to use your phone while driving, they can maybe mandate you have it turned on when you are the driver. Just like many countries around the world mandate that you use a bluetooth headset while calling and driving. But they can't force you to not break the law.

Yes, I would. But I know you don't make it thru the NSA by being stupid. So, I'm not too worried about you.  coolsmiley
