Took the boys fishing today. They both landed their first catfish. We caught 9 total and about 50 bluegill. They thought the catfish were awesome even though they were small channels they were huge to them. The little one even got his rod ripped out of his hand. I would call today a success.

Thanks. I had to force them to leave. Buddy bought that land a couple years ago and this is the first time we have fished it. He has been treating it for algae and it is finally clear enough to get a line in.

They wanted to go back today and catch some of those "huge" catfish again. I had too much yard work to do. I shoveled out the fire pit and now need to go dump it at my parents. I would so much rather be fishing  uglystupid2

as said,  they will remember as I did the many Saturday mornings waking Dad up to go fishing in our 9.9hp 14 foot fiberglass boat.  I swear we went near every Saturday morning to the Madison lakes before they got yuppiefied with all the speed boaters and started charging 10 bucks to launch a fishing boat.  I think it was 3 bucks some 20 years or more ago.  Coming home with 30-50+ bluegills/crappies in our old coleman green cooler filled with ice and fish slime taking another 1-2 hours cleaning them all up, then taking an afternoon Saturday nap were fond memories indeed.

Never cared much for catfish tried them not my favorite, but go to some rivers and try them youngsters landing a 5-10 lb. carp and they will have their hands full indeed.

Biggest fish I attempted to land before it spooled me in about 20 seconds was either a 20-50lb. guessing sturgeon or paddlefish on the WI river fishing for 1-2 lb. walleye on light action rods with 6-8lb. test.  That is what I get for having 6lb. test on panfish light action rod which have handled 10lb. carp before on, but that MONSTER that time from below took off like a DART and as soon as I told my brother to start the motor, my line was clean GONE off my spool in no time flat.  8 or 10lb. medium action rod might have at least seen what it was from down below since it was coming up to the surface and then SNAP, no more line on the spool.

I once landed a 74 pound flathead after a 45 minute battle. And once ocean fishing I caught a 200+ pound nurse shark. They wouldn't let me bring it on the boat. Said it would destroy the boat trying to get away. I was like if it doesn't come out of the water and in my hands it didn't happen. Apparently it didn't happen.  uglystupid2

good times,, brings back memories. I reeled in a 150lb sailfish and had it mounted. Wife did not want it in the house. That was the last time I went deep sea fishing. Basically it was like cranking a winch and I would much rather reel in a 10lb walleye which I have done many times.

Between 1-3d grade I live in Valpo IN, next to a farm with three boys my age.  We were the best of friends, and the four musketeers.  They had a giant pond in back of the farm that had been stocked, but not fished much, so it was just teeming with fish.  So for three years, we were able to fish with worms, hot dogs or anything and catch 20-40 blue gill, catfish and other smallish fish daily.  It was not uncommon to get a bite the instant your cast hit the water.  This early (happy) experience ruined me for fishing, since catching 20-40 fish in a few hours is not something you can expect to happen most places you will fish.  Ended up on an island on Lake Erie, and I could bait and cast all day from our dock and not catch a damn thing for hours.  Bored, quit.

Spear fishing became the more fun enterprise. The water level would often go out, and we could wade way out on the sandbar in tennis shoes and shorts to waist deep and spear giant orange carp and gar pike.  Nothing you could eat due to the type of fish (garbage feeders) and pollution, but still great fun.

Nothing like the smell of a 30 lb carp laying in the sun for a few days.  These were the WMDs of my youth.  Lay one carefully in front of your buddy's tent at night and whack it with a hammer a few times, and run for cover.  They'd wake up choking and cussing and promising revenge.   Smiley
