So I just got done doing a full brake change on the Valkyrie. Problem is now it feels like the front brakes might be sticking a little and I know the back one is cause I can hear it when I try to move the bike. I bleed the front calipers and have great response did not bleed the back yet and don't have much pressure back there. I will bleed them later today. I changed out my fluid as well in case your wondering why I was bleeding them. Anyhow what is the little silver looking cap under the white paper looking thing on the bottom of the brake resivour? And might this be why it feels the brakes aren't releasing all the way?

Not sure what the "thing" is-tech term-but after I learned the hard way didja clean the pistons and the bores in the calipers? If you go with new seals-2 in each bore-use fresh brake fluid to lube em up on the reinstall. Hope this helps. Road crud-nudder tech term-builds up on the exposed portion of the piston. RIDE SAFE.

What o2s said...

When I got my tired eBay Valkyrie, I changed the pads. I just mashed the pistons
in a little (boy was it hard!) to make room for the new pads. Not long after that,
I rode to work. I was trying to roll back and forth a little to get square in my
parking place, and it was like my brakes were on! They were. I put some spit
on my finger and touched the rotor, and it sizzled.

It was kind of intimidating the first time I drained the system and took
the calipers off, but they're dirt simple. There's nothing in them except the
pistons and the seals.

There's a way to clean the pistons without draining out all the fluid, though
I've never done it that way. With the caliper off and the pads out, jam something the
right thickness in where the rotor goes and mash the brakes down. The pistons will
come out far enough to expose all the crud without coming out far enough
to spew out the fluid...

Nothin beats a nicely refurbished caliper, though  cooldude

Can you identify the silver cap on this diagram?

Britman didn't see no diagram. And yes I cleaned all exposed parts. Little silver cap thing is underneath the white board inside your brake resiviour on the handlebars.

I cleaned all the exposed parts of these pistons... the grunge you can see
wasn't exposed until I pushed the pistons out further...

There is something called a protector down in the bottom of the reservoir but I don't really understand how it works.  Cheap part though.

I just did my front brakes and had a terrible dragging noise. thought the brakes were dragging but found the rotor was rubbing on the caliper. I had front wheel off for tire replace. when I put the wheel on I followed the install instructions to the tee. bottom line look for gap difference between rotor and calipers. I used a wood dowel and popped it back in line.

Thanks dale, I looked up on our microfiche here on the site and yes it's the protector that I figured I install backwards. Also I will take alert the rear caliper again and push the pistons out further and clean them. Hope that fixes the issue. Will keep ya'll posted. Thanks for the input guys.

The silver cap thing is a splash preventer. When you release the lever, fluid is forced up through the small hole and would agitate the fluid to the point of adding air into the fluid. With the preventer, this doesn't happen.

My 11yr old must have the touch cause, when we came to the garage the bike rolled freely. We still bleed the back brakes put fresh fluid in the reservoir and now I have great pressure. Took apart the front reservoir and fixed the splash guard so that won't be a problem and also have great pressure up front. And I was able to teach my son how to bleed a brake system. All in all it was a great day. Know sitting down to a grilled steak and potatoe salad with family. Happy fourth to everyone. Thanks for all the help my brothers. Stay safe .
