We came to be the caretaker of this great dog 2 1/2 years ago when she broke her leg. Long story short, we paid for the surgery to keep her out of the gas chamber. Well since she had a very mild limp that really only we could see, that made her susceptible to THIS. Saturday she chased a cat too hard and blew out her ACL on the same leg. Just got her back from surgery last night. So, its back to the cage with the cone on for a couple weeks. She's worth it though Before her mishap.

Not so sure I would do it financially, but my neighbors have spent in the range of 20K for I believe 4 surgeries to keep their cocker spaniel alive in the past 3 or 4 years, now age 12 or so. He asks me for advice all the time, rarely taking it, and when he came up to me on that over 6K price surgery a few years ago, I said all up to YOUR family, I am not so attached to their dog. NO idea why he asks me for advice on THEIR family issues? My guess is all 3 females in that family vs. him have disagreements all the time. He said if was JUST him, he would have put their dog down. Pretty sure his wife (and kids) wear the pants in that family. He wants to buy a used ski boat or 3 wheel can am spyder for HIS enjoyment, but his wife says NO! and I know them having near double the income as our family, he certainly can afford it.

There was no discussion about should we pay. We just were going to pay for it no matter what it cost. It wasn't that bad. The money is nothing compared to this dog who acts human more than a dog and is very loved by everyone who meets her. There was no question.

Thanks guys. Leppy is starting to show signs of beginning to use the leg. No serious weight on it yet but definitely progress. I do miss our walks around the neighborhood. Maybe soon.

I can relate to that, this little girl has cost me a couple grand over the years. But worth every penny, she is part of the family. Sweetest dog we have ever had, she absolutely loves every one she sees, only barks at cats and snakes.

Yup, the best animals ever. A good dog and a good horse up in the high country forest are fine companions.

"I've often said there's nothing better for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse." -Ronald Reagan If you think about it, in a way, horses were the original motorcycle. But, not to regress from the original post...yeah, have enjoyed all our dogs and their loyalty.
