Was going to Sturgis July 25th with 2 others in friends 45 foot toy hauler RV. His work has blown up and he had to cancel the trip.
So now I and the other friend leave tomorrow to ride the BRP up and back.
I've done this 3 or 4 times before but it's been a few years.
I'm looking forward to the cooler, higher elevations getting away from the humidity of this years Atlanta summer.
On the road at sparrows fart in the morning. Early lunch in Cherokee and will land wherever tomorrow evening somewhere around Little Switzerland / Pineola BC.
Home next weekend.

Nice rebound, Paul... Hope the modified road trip works out even better for you than the one to Sturgis might have! Some of my favorite memories have come as a result of wrong turns, missed turns, and U-turns... Often it's what we didn't plan on that proves to be the best outcome!!! Don't blame ya a bit for escaping the heat and humidity either... I'm a heat-refugee myself!

You must have good ears to be able to hear a sparrow fart. If I've heard a bird fart, I've never recognized it as such. It's so warm here at night that as the sparrows sleep they expand leading to mighty morning eruptions.

Rode to Sturgis back in 2005. So that's off the bucket list anyway. And quite honestly the BRP has a harder pull for me. It, along with Zion are right at the top of my favorite places to ride in the lower 48.

Interesting,, I was in Sturgis in 2005 and never saw another Valk. I think there was only 450k bikes there that year. Lol

You need to be careful with things catching fire! (Haven't heard lately on that, hope it's all finally been squared away?)

Someone posted on the Victory forum that parts of the BRP in VA. are under construction. Repaving the road with chip and seal. Yikes. Hope that is not true. Sure you will have a great time.

The pain of yesterday was followed by the pleasure of today. Clear skies to start the day at 8 leading to Blue Skies with large fluffy clouds all the way to Roanoke Virginia. 300 miles of paradise riding. Apart from a few short lived parades.

I rode the first 100mi two weeks ago and didn't run into anything like that.

We left Roanaoke Monday morning bright and early thanks to a moron with a yapping dog in the room next to us.
On the road at 6 am after a Waffle House breakfast we got to the BRP to find a large flashing sign on the side of the BRP stating that the road ahead wasn't suitable for motorbikes or bicycles.
No information about how far ahead this "hazard" was nor how long it extended for. I had called the BRP phone information the previous evening to hear that the Roanoke corridor was clear. Thanks for the precise information.
Not wanting to ride X miles only to find that indeed the road wasn't suitable and to have to backtrack we decided to do a 180 and head back south.
Leaving the BRP at Hwy 181 - Morganton NC for gas a weather radar check showed that a burgeoning red mass was heralding another downpour and with no escape once past the next "exit" at Hwy 81 we took 181 south. This a great road off the mountain and I've ridden it a few times previously when I had organized Memorial Day rides out of Lenoir.
Meandering took us out of storms way and we stayed the night in Chimney Rock at a motel with a swimming pool and tikki bar. Hic!
Up early once more and backroads with a final few miles of 4 lane and home safe.

Does the chipseal eventually smooth out and and harden up, losing all the loose chips?

Does the chipseal eventually smooth out and and harden up, losing all the loose chips? It does, but it can take months on some roads depending on amount of traffic. If it is not done right you can get a bit of washboard effect like a road close to me, State hwy 36 between Palestine, OH and Lynn, In. Yesterday they were installing it on the same 36 between Urbana, OH to hwy 4. One would not want to be on a motorcycle during this and for quite a few days. The 36 gets a lot of bike traffic and I am sure many riders had choice words when they came upon this unexpectedly. But only signs put up were loose stone, 35 mph. Repaving the 36 has been a project this year with mostly asphalt.
