My grandson caught this today. He is in hog heaven.  Smiley 77 lbs. He and I were the only ones not to get sick. Everybody else was chumming.

Nice fish. The seas look smooth in the picture. I once made fun of the lubbers as they were creating a chum slick until it happened to me. I had been out drinking all night and was not on the top of my game the next morning with the seas running 6-8 with a chop. Some sadist packed Tuna fish sandwiches for lunch that smelled worse than the Ballyhoo and that ended my penchant for harassing those that cast stomach contents over the gunwales.

Why do people think when a three day fishing charter is purchased, that just because a few individuals turn a bit green, the Captain is supposed to cancel the trip? It used to happen every time I went to the Dry Tortugas. Typical seas were 6-12 but on a 120 ft charter boat, it was mostly just up and down with little side to side motion.

Yeah, they were doing much better by the time they took the pics. We were almost back to the docks when they took the pics. And it was pretty flat. Out where we fished it was a little rough, maybe 4'.

I like the fact they're fishing "Just for the Halibut"

Priceless pictures of grandson and family

I'm a trout fisherman...99% fly fishing. Even though I've lived near the coast for many years I've never really got into ocean fishing....guess I just don't like the big gear and hardware (but I absolutely love most types of seafood cooldude)
That  being said, I take my first trip up to Anchorage this August, for a fishing expedition with a vendor and some potential clients. One day of halibut fishing and two days of flyfishing on the river...I'm pretty excited about it.
Great photos Meathead...nothing like fishing with family. Looks like a lot of work, hauling in that monster  Shocked. I'm looking forward to my trip, although it'll just be a short 4 day stint...

What river are you fishing Mike ?

We went out of Homer, but he had to take us clear across the Inlet near Mt. Illiamna to get in good fish. My wife set up the charter as a treat for my FIL. I don't remember the name of the company, but the boat was named Misty.

They're some nice barn doors and some great eating.
They are nice. But sadly the size of halibut caught has went way down. It was nothing for us to go out "back in the day" and all get over 100 lb'rs. But they've been depleted much like the Kenai Kings.

Thats my understanding too. Too bad. It seems many species are being depleted. I remember the stories of the good ole days, never had the opportunity to get any of the big ones. They would be fun to catch, but, probably like most fish, I prefer eating the little guys.

Nice, you should be proud. I and my dad both chartered on Lk Michigan for years. I never turned the boat around if someone hurled. While at the slip and about a half hour before we left I offered everyone  Dramamine. Out of a 4 charter, 3 would take it and be fine. The fool that didn't spent his morning over the rail.

The worst were guys that had been in the Navy. (Not a slam just a fact) "I don't need that crap, I was in the Navy for years"! I would tell them, this isn't the ocean. It's a completely different animal. Most of the time it was a loosing battle. And guess what, 99% of the time, they were praying to the water Gods.

If you have ever been sea sick there is nothing like it. I never have been, that's what I was told. If you know you are going on a charter, stay out of the damn bar the night before. Almost guarantee you will be the one over the side. Take the dramamine!

Interesting.  What port (s)did you charter Hooter? My Father and myself got in on the very first salmon run, probably in 66 or 67 and were immediately hooked, pun intended.  We fished Ludington, Manistee, and up to Frankfort.  Then we discovered Portage Lake in Onekema.  My Dad and Mom bought a 30 something foot trailer and spent most of the summers there, lowering the Lake Michigan water level with  Salmon catch.  He caught so many he gave most away.  Mom use to can the salmon like tuna, Dad would smoke the large ones, and fry up the smaller ones.  It was a lot of work manning those downriggers, but boy oh boy those were some fun days and times.

Good eating fish for sure cooldude
I used to fish the Bearing Sea off the fantail of a USCG Cutter in the early 80's. I remember a shipmate pulling one in the size of a single car garage door. We'd shoot the big bastards with our service issued .45's

We would beer batter fry, some ships cooks made a wonderful tomatoe based stew, blackened and grilled, no matter how you prepare it, good eating, and good times cooldude
