AND Not what you'd think-maybe.  Roll Eyes Front of my casa faces dang near due east. And it be close on to high summer here bouts. I now have a SEVERLY cropped Elm Tree that at one time supplied shade in the morning and early afternoon that helped keep the house cool. And while I was in Asheville at I-14 my friend and neighbor called me and informed me the Elm Tree in front of my casa took a lighting hit.  Lips Sealed Well turns out in the long run That lighting hit Was fatal to the Elm Tree. I now have about an 18 foot high Y shaped stump that Was the base of the Elm. I no longer have the birds and squirrels that called that tree home nor the insects it hosted. I guess I've lost my own little eco system.  Cry And with the heat and lack of rain the lawn is cooking due to the lack of shade.   Undecided Really starting to appreciate the-for lack of a nail thingy.  Embarrassed When the City Crew came with the bucket truck and chain saws I KNEW it wuz over for the Elm TREE. Reason the City took her down the figured after a survey it was cheaper to take the tree down stead of the tree takin wires down. And I wasn't charged for tree removal. BUT I duz MISS that big ol Elm Tree! Plus with needing A/C earlier in the day it are playin hob with the utility bill.  uglystupid2 Case yer missin the jist of this thread-Trees ARE Very important to All life.  cooldude RIDE SAFE.

Sucks Dennis but as ya say it didnt cost you for the take down

Have you noticed less honey bees this year out your way?

Been thinking of getting a hive set up as there are hardly any honey or bumblebees (also no yellow jackets at all) this year, noticing the effect in the garden also in the yields.

WIthout bees we are all headed for a heap of trouble.

Evan-prior to my last couple of lawn cuts the White Clover be runnin wild. BUT my neighbors and I noticed a VERY Distinct LACK of honey bees working the clover. And I have not seen one splattered on the windshield in awhile. Right after the spring rains-lotsa area flooding-the yellow jackets-folks here call em ground bees-were quite prevalent but now not seeing very many. When I made my honey post some others here on the board were noticing similar lack of bee activity in their area(s). Myelf and others in the honey post realize the gravity of mayhaps Losing the honey bees. Losing my Elm Tree was NOT my choice cuz had I a say in the outcome I would have opted for one on either side of my sidewalk. Losing the one were a 100% loss of shade tree. 2 with the loss of one would have been a 50% loss-a bit more palatable. STILL a loss but a bit easier to take. Yer in New York and noticing a lack of honey bee activity as I am in Missouri. Anyone else noticing a lack of honey bee activity in their area? RIDE SAFE.

Don't let it slow you down, O2S.  Plant another elm sprout and in twenty-five, maybe thirty, years you'll have shade again.    cooldude

Some old wise man once said the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best is today.

Sorry to hear about the tree, lightening does take out a few.   Seen a lot of trees that were hit in the woods in my time.  Some live to tell about the hit, some just don't.

Evan, here's some local info for ya.

Beekeeping is a great hobby, some what expensive and time consuming, but aren't all hobbies?

I'm enjoying my hive and will be harvesting some honey later today.

I lost my back garage to a tornado back in 2014.
Two huge oaks toppled and took out a 3rd oak on the way down, leaving a 12' tall root ball from the twin oaks and their two trunks crushed the garage.

The clean up was a massive undertaking, including hauling off the garage debris after salvaging whatever contents that I could (including my 99 IS and an 82 GL1100).

Now, my 9' deep in-ground pool water gets up to 90 degrees.
When those trees were there, it MIGHT hit 82 for a day or two during the heat waves.
Most of the summer, it would stay in the mid to low 70s which was much more refreshing.

So, I KNOW what you mean about "missing" your tree.
I'm sure my air conditioning costs have also gone up.
I sure do have a LOT more grass to cut in the back yard now, that's for sure.
My only advice to RESIST the urge to plant any pines.
They grow fast, but are trash and their droppings contribute to your house rotting from their acidity.

I was at the Lake Lure flower bridge yesterday and all your bees etc were there having a feast.

http://lakelurefloweringbridge.org/

Plus the abundance of bees buzzing around at the Craggy Gardens visitor center.
