Had to go in for a heart cath procedure Wednesday. Ended up with two new stints to replace one that failed after 17 years. All in all that was not too bad. I was informed after the procedure that I am a type two diabetic and that probably caused my current heart issue. I have to take responsibility as I ignored some obvious signs. I'm going to really work at getting this thing under control. I've still got 2 grandsons that I want to see grow up!
The heart issue is a blessing in disguise as I don't know when I woul have discovered the diabetes. There is always a silver lining if you look for it.

I too have a stent that I have had for 15 years. I have been battling type 2 diabetes for about 7 years and for me trying to control it is a battle. On top of that I go in Monday morning for a partial kidney removal becase of a cancer on my right kidney and I have been in stage 3 kidney failure for several years now. I am not going to sit around having a pity party but I am going to enjoy every minute that I can. I married the love of my life 27 years ago and she helps me be stronger and we all know what gassing on the Valkyrie does for you, instant stress relief. Hope you get the diabetes under control and hang in there, life is good.

Please don't take this wrong but are you heavy aka fat? If so and you have a hard time losing weight you mightthink about doing a gastric bypass. I knowit sounds drastic but one of the positive side effects is that it eliminated Type 2 diabetes. Don't, ask me the technical points but generally large people have ahigher tendency to heart problems and type 2 diabetes
I did it 2 1/2 years ago and have lost approximately 170 lbs. Near perfect pulse and heart rate. Now depending on the program you can do all the prep for the surgery to include the required medical diet and then decide after all the training and prep that you feel you can completed and maintain your goal through dieting then you are miles ahead of trying to figure it out or follow all the fad diets.
How you get well.

I could be riding Monday, if my bike was in running condition. Haven't felt like riding in the last few years, guess I know why now.

I am currently 209 lbs although I have been as high as 250. The most troubling part of that is that I haven't been trying to lose weight. A a matter of fact the last 2 years my eating habits have been terribly unhealthy. I would not rule out the bypass but I don't think I would be a candidate at this point. I fully intend to do my part to beat this. I met you some years back at a ride in north central Kentucky an I am glad to know you are doing well though I don't know if I would recognize your 170lb self!

It's Friday. You're alive. That makes it a good week in my book. Go out and walk. Just walk every day and put away the crap food. Just walk today, tomorrow, the next day, and every day. That will be the beginning of your recovery. Get a cheap pedometer and hitch it to your belt. Walk out a quarter mile and then walk back. Do that for a couple of weeks and then stretch it out another eighth of a mile and do that for a couple of weeks. Etc., etc. Just walk.

Too hot out today, so 30 minutes on the treadmill this afternoon. The treadmill is good too. If you like to swim - even better - swimming is GREAT all over cardio. During the summer I usually swim at least 1/2 mile a day (I have my own pool in the backyard). I need to get back into walking after it gets too cold to swim again. I'm definately carrying too much me, and no doubt it contributes to my Type 2 Diabetes as well. But - my resting pulse is usually around 60-65 all the time. My diabetes is generally well controlled, but if I overwork I suffer on overheating and I get INTENSELY hungry - protein bars are a staple in our house. Get to the diabetes education class and be very strict on your diet. Once in a while you can be bad (and it's easier to justify with the extra workouts). I try to stick to low / no carb / low / no sugar added treats when possible, but it does get boring snacking on nut bars.

Diet and exercise will be your two best friends! Like someone else said, stay away from the junk. You CAN beat this.
If you look at this, it was a great week.

John, As an incentive to help motivate you, when you think you're back to an appropriate condition, we'll do a photo shoot for my new calendar. It's titled Old Guys on Bikes in Thongs (Swim Wear). Obviously, you'll want to be in that calendar........... There will be participation or revenue sharing and I feel confident we'll be able to finance our next outing with the proceeds. (Maybe) My last attempt on a calendar didn't sell too well. It was titled "Old Fat Guys In Thongs". I'm sure bringing the fat ladies into the pic will help sales.

Truer words were never spoken, It could have been a heart attack that could have left you dead or crippled for life. Look at it as a warning and go on with life. My mother who was an ER nurse and worked in the ICU said fair, fat and 40. Well I think it should be more like 50 or 60. I know 2 people dead of heart attacks in just a few months, so I think its a great day for you. Stents are easy and if you take right medicines, exercise and loose weight your prognosis is great. Congratulations its not your time to go. but just a thought 17 years ago you were given a warning and you didnt listen to do the things you should. Please listen now and make some lifestyle changes so your around to enjoy riding.

I'll dig out my old jock strap and see how I look! The nurses in the heart cath lab got a little carried away shaving my junk so no need for any manscaping for my thong shot
