If someone stands in range of me and threatens to kill me, as I have no reason to disbelieve him, I would deal with the threat as real and imminent. I don't classify that as stepping up to a plate. He has repeatedly said that the USA is his real target.

He reminds me of that skeeter that wakes you up in the middle of the night, buzzing around your head. A constant irritation until you finally slap him down when he gets close enough to your ear. I think that little fat twit(my apologies to twits) is not far from being slapped down. Is he really so stupid as to think he'd last more than a few days if he started something with the U.S.? Yes, there would be human carnage, but he doesn't seem to care.

Reminds me of a guy when I was in high school who, for some reason, kept egging me on....wanting to fight me. The fat slob wouldn't leave me alone, like that midnight mosquito. I told my dad I wanted to beat him to a pulp, whereupon dad told me "even then, the pulp will come up talking."  Turns out he was right because one afternoon he cornered me, about three well placed blows and it was nighty-night. I waited around and a few minutes later he comes around so I left. So what did this jerk spread around school....it wasn't a fair fight! Huh? There is no such thing in the alley, so I offered a rematch. That was over 60 yrs. ago, I'm still waiting his answer.  Grin

The problem with "slapping him down" is that he has his finger on the button that launches a whole ____-load of missiles towards South Korea.  Seoul (population around 10 million) is only about 40km from the border, so there certainly won't be sufficient time to get 10 million people into bomb shelters.  Anyone slapping down Kim Jong-un will precipitate the deaths of thousands (tens of thousands?) of innocent South Koreans.  I wish there was a simple solution.

If the right people are planning and  executing the possible responses, there should be zero US people on land. I think someone probably knows the general whereabouts of NK weaponry and leaders. They are probably ALL within range of cruise missiles arriving at their respective targets simultaneously. I think we should not allow NK to be capable of striking us with Nukes, but I more fully support a non-nuke attack on their facilities.

Yeah, it all seems pretty easy. Until the crap hits the fan. They have learned that having nuclear bombs equals power. Doesn't matter to them how rough their populace has to live. I don't know how we can do much to influence the situation. Their people know nothing but what they are told by their Supreme Leader.

They've had 65 years to dig in, harden their bunkers, set up protected artillery positions, etc.

Could we beat them? Of course.

Do we have the will to do what it would take to really take them out?

Probably not.

And that's not even considering if China gets involved in the festivities...

As a Korean War Vet, I have a deep respect for South Korea.  I'm thinking of Seoul Korea that is in immediate range of 8,000 dug inheavy artillery. Not to mention missiles and a huge fanatic army of North Koreans.

There is no way that the US could stop the slaughter, we don't have the capability. Probably, even if we could get the UN nations to help (such as it is) it still wouldn't do it.

yes, we could blow that fat dictator all to Hell, but meanwhile.   Wishful thinking would see something like the Valkyrie operation against Hitler but successful.  Knowing the Asian mindlessness for 'saving face', that won't happen since the North Korean population under two dictators is completely indoctrinated.

There is no easy answer and even Eisenhower and Reagan, if they were president today, would have a dilemma to try to solve.

All this is predicated on China and maybe Russia not stepping in.

While we retaliate n k wipes out South Korea. russia and china figure out WHAT'S happening in their respective command centers and decide-W T F-lets go along with the little effer with the bad hair cut and they launch against us-U S of A. Our Ballistic I C B M Submarines are not in an ideal position and a goodly portion of their compliment is on It's way to n k. As is a goodly portion of our land based I C B Ms. When our Command Center(s) realize-uh crap-that the russkies and the chinese have indeed and fact turned on us as have some of the radical mooslims with I c b ms!  Evil Not an exact quote BUT isn't there mention of fire in Revelations? Timing and technology could be lining up for Armageddon. GOD is NOT gonna consult us. IF/WHEN the little effer with the bad hair duz launch I for one would rather go quickly. AND judging by what reports come out of n k the little effer duz NOT have the best interests or well being of his country at heart-providing he has a heart. NK does NOT have to hit our mainland

They only have to have a weapon detonate high in the atmosphere to send most of our country (and Canada) back to the 1800's  Although from my recent visit to the Canadian Rockies, they would do better than us as their beer supply is quite large

However I wonder whether a tactical EMP (test exercise) over the ocean NE of NK would fry their command centers while not sending South Korea and Russia into the dark ages   China has an opportunity to end this, if they dont they should be collateral damage as the Russians in any strike.

Our subs, anywhere, can hit targets anywhere, its the beauty of ICBM's and the terror at the same time

Exactly - the 14 boomers can hit ANYWHERE in the world in 15 minutes - even while inport in CONUS.

(There are 18 Ohio class subs, but due to treaty restrictions only 14 of them are carrying SLBMs - the others are carrying guided missles.).

Not to mention what the Air Force has in both bombers and ICBMs, and what ever else the Navy is carrying on carriers / small boy combatants. Russia has more ICBMs, but less of the others.

I really don't want to see a nuke exchange happening in Korea. Granted we can turn South Korea into a virtual island, but at what cost ?

I have no confidence in our government being able to handle a problem of this magnitude at the present time. Nor do I see other nations whose help we need coming to our aid given the recent conduct and reputation of our Commander in Chief.

Our only prudent course of conduct is to kick the ball down the road and hope another Nation competent to assume a position of leadership assumes that role. Other nations will not trust and rely on the U.S. at the present time.

The volatility of our current leadership creates a very dangerous situation.

I agree in that N.K. problems have been allowed to develop for years and the present state of affairs is in no way the fault of the current administration.

Actually, the only solution I see must be based mainly on China cutting them off and that in and of itself could increase the danger.

Putting myself in China's shoes, it would be to our advantage and very helpful to have a little brother or friend who can take out, harass or keep the attention of the biggest competition China has.    They have no incentive to put a choke collar on NK.
