They were still there in '66 when my family drove it southward. Wonder when they all disappeared? I seemed to remember it as a 1200 mile gravel road.

They have plenty of motels. I'm not sure why the writer said that. Was your Dad up there in the military ? It's 99% paved now. It used to be people took spare wheels and tires with them. The front of your vehicle barricaded with chicken wire, to block all the rocks.

Air Force at Elmendorf (Anchorage). We were there during the Cuban Missile Crises. Bombers and fighters constantly coming and going. I was a mere lad but I wasn't scared. As everyone knows, I could see Russia from there and would know if they were coming.    Then there was the Good Friday Earthquake. 9.2 or 9.3 on the Richter Scale. It seemed to last forever! Scared the crap out of me!

it's a small world. We were there '60-'62. Lived on base for a couple months till we got into the apartments down on 9th St. My youngest brother was born on Elmendorf, along with a sister who died at a week old. We buried my Dad with her there 15 years ago. We got transferred to Montgomery Alabama before the quake.

Definitely a small world.  We went the other way. Montgomery (Maxwell AFB) to Anchorage.

              Good read. I can cross off the Blue Ridge Mountains, Route 66 (All the way), parts of Pacific coast highway, Portland to Bar Harbour. I'm planning parts of the Alaskan Highway and possibly Canada's Iceland highway next summer. As for the rest, very doubtful, since you can't ride there from here.
             PS. They forgot Route 16 thru West Virginia and Virginia.

Well we can check off a few of those, Black Forest Germany, Route 66, Grande Strada Delle Dolomiti, Italy, of course the BRP (cant count how many times, always a joy to ride) and a few others that are not mentioned.
