An oil leak question

about 10 years ago I had what appeared to be an oil leak with the oil coming out of the water pump.  I know that I bought and installed a new pump, but I almost sure that I later found out that all I really needed was the little "O" ring in side. I just posted this question on the "1500 tech" board.  Another Valk owner just e-mailed me asking this same question as he now seems to have the exact same problem and I don't want to give him any wrong advice. Anyone know for sure??
