Anyone ever run the Devils HWY in AZ? We spent the night in small town of Springerville AZ and saw a lot of shirts saying "I survived the devils hwy". I believe it is 191. I was at the edge of it but it was 5p already when we got there.

Yes  cooldude it's too bad you didn't have enough time for it. I think it's called that because it used to be Hiway 666. I've got the hiway 666 sticker on the back of my trunk.  Smiley

Glad I got to see it, albeit briefly, before the PC police got a hold of it...

Plan on riding it this year. A buddy of mine usually rides it once a year. It is supposed to be amazing, completely out does the tail of the dragon mainly because it is not a tourist destination. We wanted to do it 2-up on the Duke but it is about a 520 mile day and we cant leave the animals for that long...

Too bad Brian that you didn't ride it. I rode it a few years ago on my '05 wing. The ride/road is spectacular. From South to north you gain altitude from 2500' to over 9000'. It was a nice day but I stayed in Alpine and woke up to ice on the seat. From scenic pullouts you can see 100 miles East or West. You have to plan on nearly 100 miles without fuel stops.

I've riden this road many times, always from the south to north going up. Its a spectacular ride, you start out overlooking an open pit copper mine and end up in Eagar or Springerville.
You have to stop and check out the arrow tree when you ride this road.

A couple or so years ago I heard of this on one of the Discovery Channel shows.  It may have gotten the name from some of the weird stuff that has happened to travelers on this road over the years.   There are bad spirits and in some cases downright pure evil that has and continues to occur and that is why it got it's name.

The one show I watched went into 3 different stories.  It may have been the first time I heard of the black eyed children that do not really act like children.  They generally are hooded and will ask knock on your house door asking to come in.  In the show I saw they came up to a car and told the driver they really needed to get into his car.  When they raised their heads a little he could see the totally black eyes that look absolutely  soul less.   The good thing is that they can not come into your place unless you give them permission.  So far no tales of what happens to folks that let them in.

A buddy and I rode up from Morenci to Springerville.  The Morenci mine alone is worth passing that way.  Humoungous open pit mine and visible from space.

191 (old 666) is not to be missed.  I will say that deer are plentiful.  We saw plenty of them on our trip up the road.  A family once, poised to cross the road.  A bit unsettling.  But, a heckuva route.

A few years back a couple of our members here: MrArn, his daughter and F6Banger made the trip from border to border, Mexico to Canada. I'm sure a search could bring up the details. I believe MrArn also maintained a daily blog during the trip.

Also a few years back the AZ and SoCal Valk riders let me join them on a good piece of 191, a good group outing for sure. I've taken it a few times on the bike and a couple cage trips.

Back in November 2004, my son & I were headed out in the old Monte Carlo to my make my daughter's wedding in Vegas and had a late evening start coming from Alamosa CO. Taking some of the non-main highway's, son driving, I awake to hear my son say "I think I may have made a wrong turn". We travel along a bit and finally see the highway sign 666 and I tell him in a solemn voice, "no son, it's all finally catching up to us, we're on the right road..."  Embarrassed

We finally connected with I-40 and hightailed it toward Vegas with the unplanned side trip thru the Hoover Dam.
