Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: August 23, 2017, 04:58:21 PM »

"I'll get by with a little help..."

"… from my friends…" Yesterday evening and all day today, I've been humming or singing that song! Yikes! There ALI and I were, cruising along on the UP of Michigan enjoying the ride and pleasant temps, thinking of what an amazing and fabulous outing this has been… I was even starting to think about where we might land for the evening… and perhaps celebrating just a wee bit with some barley pops… Then…

Poor ol' ALI girl started to lurch, jump, cut on and off a time or two, then just totally quit! This was no hick-up!!! Now, for a non-tech, non-wrench kind of guy, this is not something you want to experience…

Mercifully, we were able to pull over onto the shoulder of the road out of immediate danger… and grab the phone! Nowadays, my first reaction to a boo-boo is to call troutdude! That calm, wise man can handle just about anything, and he can surely calm this usually steady but occasionally excitable guy down… he did…

He talked me through a couple of items to check, then he concluded it had to be the alternator going kah-flooie that was ailing our girl. Well, by the time that had happened, the battery had already mostly been discharged, so… We were in a pickle, and ordinarily it would be time to call a tow truck… However…

Thanks to another good friend, Punisher, I happened to have with me one of those Intelli-geek contraptions just like the one Allan carries on his bike… that he had showed me last year when he and I were riding around the Ozarks together… I'd been impressed enough to order one for our girl as soon as I got back home…

Well, that thing has an air pump attachment, and I've used that feature to top off my car tires a few months ago. I have not, however, had occasion to jump off a vehicle or otherwise use the power boost feature… until yesterday! When I hooked that up, everything worked again on ALI!!! But, without an alternator or battery, about the only thing we'd really done was isolate the problem, and prepare ourselves for the wait on a tow…

I'd passed a motel with a restaurant and bar a few miles back, so if only I could make it there, I could re-group and figure what to do next… Then that light bulb went off over my head, you know the one, and… I still get a grin when I think about me, of all people, being creative and resourceful and doing this all on my own… but…

I found a way to set that power boost power supply unit on top of the battery, attach the alligator clips to the battery posts, and still get the seat back on without screwing anything up! I put the battery cover plate under a bungee cord on my T-Bag. I fired our girl up and off we rode back towards that motel… And, we made it!!! Got a room, then proceeded to walk over to the Lone Wolf Saloon for a cheeseburger, onion rings, and a couple of cool ones… Life can be so good, sometimes, even in the midst of adversity!!!

In the meantime, I'd been exchanging texts and phone calls with Dennis, and an array of possibilities was starting to develop… I put the power unit on re-charge overnight, and I put a charger unit on ALI's battery, too, that the nice lady at the motel had loaned me… I thought to myself, "WOW! This clean-living and pure-thoughts stuff is really paying off!" Probably not St. Peter himself, some lesser angel I imagine, but whoever keeps score on that must grade on the curve, though… I didn't think I was actually doing so well on those, myself… but…

I'd been in touch, via text messaging, with Big BF, and he would do the work… He did not have an alternator, however, and I would have to come to him… a couple of hundred miles away! We considered some other options that would involve less distance… and less risk of becoming stranded again…

A local yooper had told me in passing that there was a Honda dealer in Mackinaw City. Well, that would mean having to ride about fifty miles AND crossing the Big Mac Bridge! Well, the thought of conking out, especially on that bridge, was a bit spooky, but… I had to do something. So, I loaded up ALI, put the power unit on her battery, replaced the seat, crossed my fingers, and… she fired right up! I threw a leg over her saddle and we did a major skee-daddle in a hurry-up mode!

A guy in a pick-up moving at a pretty good clip passed us in a passing zone, so I fell in behind him… A good pace vehicle, I thought, and it would partially hide the fact I'd pulled the headlight fuse to reduce power usage… It worked!

He led me all the way to the bridge, where I had to pause to pay the toll… No issues, then it was up and over the top… There was work being done on the bridge, so one lane was closed off… the paved lane! Yep, we had to negotiate the entire thing on the steel grate lane with a serious cross-wind blowing us about… Still, we managed…

At the first exit off I-75 as you come off the south end of the bridge, I spotted a Shell sign… I pulled in there to top off and see if any recharging would be necessary… She wouldn't start again after fueling, so I pushed her to a parking space, got out the charger for the power module… and went inside.

Three hours later, the unit was fully recharged again, I'd had two large cups of coffee (the first of the morning as the motel offered none!), and I'd dined on a chili-dog for brunch… A plan had come into focus during that stop, and it would require far less riding than what we'd been looking at…

The nearest Honda dealer was in Gaylord, MI (turns out there isn't one in Mackinaw City after all), about fifty to sixty miles farther south. I called them, but… In spite of my pleading, the service guy would not budge… fourteen days at least before they could get to us! He did suggest, however, that I call Indian River Power Sports to see if they might could help… they were only about half way between Mac City and Gaylord!

Well, I did make that call, and they agreed to help us out! Dennis (troutdude) put an alternator in overnight shipping via UPS, and it's supposed to arrive here tomorrow. I hooked everything up on ALI again, and headed for Indian River… I made it to a motel, but I had to push her to a parking space again after check-in…

I don't know how close we'd been cutting it or how much more riding we might could have done, but we had to be pushing the limits… Have I ever mentioned that I'd rather be lucky than good? Oh well, I'll get by with a little help from my friends… and a lot of continued luck!!!

Couldn't agree more! He's one very special dude, for sure... I appreciate the call today, too, amigo... I know you are under the weather, but it's good to know you were still thinking about us and staying in touch... Thx for the Facebook post on our behalf, too... Since I 'unfriended myself', I don't know what goes on over there... not that I ever did anyway...

Yep, more than a few times, in fact! He's but one of many, though, although he has done so much over the past few years... So many good folks... good friends... that have all pitched in to keep ALI and me together and roaming around the continent... If I were to mention them all here, it would be a rather lengthy list... but you can bet his name would be at the top!!!

Of all the folks I know, I think that reality has come home to me about as much as anyone I can think of! Sitting outside a motel room beside a wounded companion, broken down with our girl beside the road, sitting in a dealership waiting for a verdict on her condition, filled with doubt and confusion... So many times my friends have come to our rescue, and because of that we're still out here living the dream... And, yes! Those brewskis were quite good... they even seemed to taste extra good in light of the special circumstances unfolding at that very moment... Thanks for noticing that aspect and for calling it to our attention...

It's good to hear you are ok, and that Ali will be soon. Good things come to good people. It's no wonder you have MANY friends. Just glad I'm able to call you one. I've only had one alternator go bad on me. It is very stressful when you are miles and miles from help. Take care my friend.  cooldude

P.S. When you get all settled in and back in ship shape. I'd be interested to find out more about this power contraption. Sounds like it might be something worth carrying.  Smiley

Bruce, so glad to hear that you are getting the help you need for Ali.
Petra after reading the initial post started Googeling how far away you were and was plotting a rescue plan. I was certain there were family members a wee bit closer than we are that could help. But the love this family has for you and Ali is truly special that I think most would go to extremes to help out.  cooldude

Yeah, Dennis and Mitch are cut from the same bolt of cloth!!! Mitch has had his hands on our girl more than a few times, too... and he is definitely a 'go to' kind of guy, just as Dennis is! I've traveled a good bit now with both of them, and I've never found any better road trip partners!

Hardly a day goes by that I don't reflect on that statement Mitch made to me a couple of years ago about Valks and ownership... It is indeed 'all that goes with it' that makes them so special. Such an incredibly great bunch of folks!!!

Funny, even with all the difficulties ALI and I both have had with this aging process thing, I don't get any feelings of dread or anxiety when something serious happens... I know we're in good and capable hands, and that things will work out just fine. Often, things that would normally seem downright bad have turned out to be highlight material for stories... and examples of the goodness that permeates this entire organization...

Well, I'm still at the motel getting ready for the trek to the bike shop... I'm in no hurry, though, because once there, I'll be waiting some more on the UPS person... Oh well, this is all big-time adventure stuff, and I can almost guarantee there will be a story in all of this... reckon?

Glad the pieces are coming together!

Decades ago I lost the stator on my little 350 Honda thing...in Amarillo...stopped at a farm store and bought a big ole tractor battery (BFTB!) ...had some stupid-high number of amp hours...and strapped that thing on the luggage rack...50 pounds or more of it...and cabled it to the battery.

Pulled the headlight fuse, and rode all day like that. Made it home...of course...I was poor then so couldn't get a stator...so I just charged the (BFTB!) every night. Even ran the headlight. I think I rode her like that for near a year!

Rock on Bruce!

Roaming Bug killer,
When I still had the Sleigh I always carried an extra Alternator and a power box in the trailer.   Still have the power box but I sent the alternator down to someplace in Loosianna to a guy called T-Dude.  Be interesting if that made it's way all the back up north to fix Ali.  If it is the same one, added to the bell and Ali will never have trouble again.  Good for another 600,000.
Ride safe and hope to see you in Sparta.

Life is soooooo good!!! The wind felt extra nice today, as we pulled away from that shop and jumped up on the freeway and let it loose! Ahhhhh, we rode for about 40 miles, then it was time for some groceries! I hadn't eaten a meal since that chilidog the morning before, so I was hungry fer sure. The restaurant I stopped at served breakfast all day, so... yep bacon and eggs, toast and taters... and sweet tea!

Now you'd think with all the corn grown in these parts, grits would be available... nope! Oh well, I'll be getting into the 'zone' in a few more days... and life will be even better once again! Heck, I've been in withdrawals so long now, I've even started dreaming about them at night! If you're a southerner, no explanation is necessary... if you ain't, no explanation is possible!!!

Anyway, I'm just basking in the warm glow of being mobile again... More than that, I'm also reveling in the knowledge that I'm a member of such a fine organization... a community of brothers and sisters who always respond when a need arises... I'm just proud to be here!!!

I could of easily helped you.  Here is a site for northern repair shop in MI next time any one up north needs one  http://www.highlandtrails.net/  The owner and his Dad both ride valkyries. I think we still have vortex available for our member's. Glad everything worked out for you.

TGTommy,

Yeah, no bout a doubt it! I've been blessed with some fine assistance and some solid advice... I'm better off because of it, too, but I'd have been even better off had I taken all of the advice from the start... Oh well, things are all good now, at least as far as I know... mechanically speaking, anyway. Can't seem to shake this tendency I apparently have to commit a boo-boo or make a bonehead choice now and then, however... More about that in another thread...

I know y'all will have a fabulous time on the Darby Ride... Sadly, I won't be making it this time, though, but I will be with y'all in spirit... please say 'Hi' to everyone for me. Looking forward to hearing about it when you return...
