Two things.. Belts and stumble off idle.

I just ordered two Gates timing belts from Amazon for $45.00 total plus shipping.  I thought that was pretty cool. 

I have run a tank of Seafoam mixed in with the gas through my IS and the stumble off of idle seems to be markedly better, maybe gone altogether.  I'm cautiously optimistic.  As I get older I'm more of a "If it ain't broke don't fix it" kinda guy.

+1  I enjoy tinkering and maintaining, I hate wrenching on a broken scooter, especially on the side of the road.

Since I ride alone and in the middle of nowhere and not knowing there condition, I changed my timing belts at 12 years old and 36,000 miles. The belts looked brand new to me, just piece of mind I guess.

I too tend to ride alone and in the middle of nowhere.  BUT I just replaced my belt at 105K miles on my '99 I/S.  Belts were still in good shape.

Without digging through the older (GL1100/1200) service manuals to check: Didn't Honda spec a replacement/mileage interval for these belts once upon a time?

I do all my scheduled maintenance but, I don't fool with things that don't need fooling with.  There was a time when I did.  Never had a payoff.

Most likely. But the world has moved along. Now it's inspect at 100K miles. No time limit.

I did my 88' GW at 60K miles and 25 years. No issue. But with the cost of the belts being as low as they are, it is inexpensive to replace them when they are inspected.

my 1988 honda civic belt has almost 300K on it when i replaced it.  still looked new.

So, does that mean your water pump also had 300,000 miles too?
