Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: August 25, 2017, 05:21:27 PM »

                                                        A Crylon Thing...

As Johnny Bench used to say, "No runs, no drips, no errors!" Life is wonderful again, and our girl is running like she's supposed to!!! She was really strutting her stuff this afternoon, and I have to admit I was feeling rather pert myself... After a hundred-fifty miles or so, I checked when we stopped, and... dry as a bone!

When I got to my room last night, there was a text from Big BF wanting to know if things had gone well at the bike place earlier that day... I told him about the new 'oil leak' that had just started, and he immediately thought of the 'O' ring that goes on alternators... I asked if he could look at it today, and he, of course, said yes... just bring ALI by where he was in Howell, MI...

The shifter seal had been changed only two months ago by Troutdude and Lucky13 when we'd stopped in Clinton on the way to Colorado and then InZane... More oil was leaking this time than any time previously I'd ever seen... I had changed the oil and filter about two weeks ago, and I knew it wasn't a gasket from the old filter still on there, so... The 'O' ring thought really resonated with me, too..

Actually, I was hoping it would be something that simple! I worried that something else more worrisome might have crept up on us due to the lengthening of our teeth, but it didn't hurt to have someone of Big BF's caliber and reputation to guess it was something that easy to remedy... That comforting prospect did produce a quiet night's sleep!!!

I rode down to the place he is using in Howell as a garage/work shop temporarily, and he put her up on the rack he had waiting and set-up to do diagnostics as soon as we arrived... It did take a whole couple of seconds to verify that that was indeed the issue!!! Eureka!

He happened to have another 'O' ring that he took off an alternator he had in a box, so he set about replacing the old one that had been on there barely twenty-four hours! From the look of it, the mechanic the day before must have forced the new alternator in place and crushed the 'O' ring pretty severely in the process...

I watched Big BF as he first removed the alternator, then the now old 'O' ring and installed the newest new one... and then reinstalled the alternator itself. Pretty tight quarters for sure! He had to patiently wiggle, jiggle, and gently nudge at just the right time, but with a smile he made it all work out... and it 'looked' so easy! I know better, though...

Once again, a VRCC-wide joint project has saved the day. That list of folks who've made a substantial contribution to keeping us going continues to grow, and a guy I'd met and seen around over the years, but never had occasion to ask him to do any work for us, impressed the dickens out of me! Have I ever mentioned that it sure is good to be me? Well, I sure think it is!!!

DDT

P.S. No, I don't know at the moment just where I'm headed next... I may lay over here an extra day (a pretty good set-up for hanging out), but mostly I'll be meandering southeastward towards the Meet in the Middle Ride coming up Labor Day weekend... There is one stop along the way I'll likely make, but other than that... I just don't know... and, as Martha Stuart says, "That's a good thing..." I do know where I'm going right now, however... this place has a restaurant and lounge! I'm thinking a cold frosty might be just the thing, huh...

Big BF has gotten me out of more than a few situations over the years, at Inzanes, at his place in Phoenix and here at home.

Glad he was able to continue the string of great saves for you and Ali

Maybe I need to order that O ring to keep with my spare alternators

Ya never know

Bill helped me out in Frisco, Colorado to get me back on the road.  Class act!  Glad it was not an extensive repair required!  Safe winds to you both.   cooldude cooldude cooldude

Dale, it was a great pleasure meeting you, too! Most impressive 'farm' you have there... And, a most impressive life you have going on... I had no idea people actually still jousted!!! I imagine no one else on this board has any idea of your avocation, but it is a story that truly should be told... Valk riders are indeed a curious lot, and you are definitely a fascinating rider/character!

You provided Big BF with an ideal venue for doing what he does, and I now know a bit more and have a different slant on his remarkable journey... For me personally that all has worked out really well, too! Thank you for your roll in making all of this happen... Hope to see you again down the road someplace...

Dennis, I have no doubt!!! I'm sure God has a special place in Heaven all set up for you when your time comes! As great as it is that you're always there when we need you, the best part is that 'you get it'... You do understand the emotional bonds and genuine affection we share with our 'riding partners'... I appreciate ya, dude!

DDT

As impressive as BF is as a mechanic and 'Valk Guru', he is an even more impressive person... I had the great pleasure to spend an hour or two with a man I'd met several times over the years, but I had never gotten to know... I'm glad fate saw fit to remedy that deficiency in my life...

VICKI!!!!!!!!! My dear friend! WOW, it is so good to see a post from you, TNT! I was talking about you just yesterday (all good things, of course). Dale's farm where Big BF is doing his work for now is actually a horse farm, and 'the lady of the house' raises and trains horses... Naturally, I had to tell Dale about my friend in southeastern Tennessee who does the same thing... As I ride along, I often have memories of the times back in the day that we shared... wonderful memories of a special time and place... It would be great to see you again... any chance you'll be doing the Meet in the Middle Ride Labor Day weekend?

Yes indeed! This is a family with all aspects present... the good, the bad, and the ugly... However, all of those ingredients combine to forge the bonds that hold us together. While we're not dysfunctional like many families are, we do manage to have a tiff or two now and then... In the end, though, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.  I do love my life, but I love most of all the folks that have come into it and given me a chance to learn what really matters. In case I've failed to mention it, I'm proud to be here!!!

"... just bring ALI by where he was in Howell, MI..."

Our sister farm is in Gregory, a short ride from Howell.  Smiley  If you need to rest up in NC Ohio, I have a spare bed.  Wink  I could give you a ride around on a pontoon or give you a tour of a veggie farm, or both!

Bruce, you're probably long past New Haven, indiana today (Saturday) but there is a neat Fire Muster going on in our town today (Saturday) New Haven is just east of Ft. Wayne off I469 in NE Indiana.

Lots of interesting things going on today, over 100 fire trucks, plus I live here (maybe thats' not so interesting)

Glad everytning worked out the way it did with BigBf being in the area close enough to ride to him. and he happened to have a used gasket that would work.

Sometimes, in spite of setbacks, the stars do line up, Bruce.

I guess it's all part of "wishing you enough, my friend"!

But just to finish out this journey, I might have to "Wish you more!".

That lesson, 'I wish you enough', resonated with me when I first read it in one of your posts... and it has stuck with me! All of the adversities I've had, especially while hooked-up with ALI, seem to work out just that way! One 'Ah-Shucks' seems to prepare us for something else in the future.

Anyway, the dread and 'down' feelings I used to get just don't happen any more... because, nothing seems to happen in a vacuum or be 'an isolated' event. T-man 403 and I chatted on the phone yesterday, and we laughed about that very thing and how things have always worked out for both of us. Your post drew attention to that and generated some serious thought about it... THANKS! It has helped when dealing with issues.
