Interesting article telling history of what was probably the US marshal who inspired the Lone Ranger character.

His name was Bass Reeves, he rode a light gray steed, carried twin .45 Colt Peacemakers in a cross belt and used a signature black hat. He was born in 1838, served as Marshal from 1875 to 1907 (32 years), captured 3000 living felons, have killed only 16 (as he preferred to resort to killing only for self defense).

At an era where the average height was 5'6", he towered at 6'2". He lived a couple years with the Cherokee where he learned how to speak fluently 5 native american languages.

He used to give silver dollars as a calling card.

The full article:
https://www.policeone.com/police-heroes/articles/6408028-Police-History-Was-U-S-Marshal-Bass-Reeves-the-real-Lone-Ranger/

A true American hero, after leaving his position as US Marshal, he took a position at Muskogee Oklahoma Police Department until his passing in 1910 of natural causes. A lawman for life.

Detail: he was also the first black lawman West of Mississippi, born a slave in Crowford County in Arkansas. After hearing of the Emancipation Proclamation, Bass proclaimed himself to be a free man and escaped.

I'm a life long Fort Smith (Hell On The Boarder) resident where Bass Reeves lived and worked for Judge Parker (The Hanging Judge) Big statue of Bass Reeves mounted and with his dog, downtown a short distance away.  also there is a statue of General William O Darby who founded the Army Rangers in WWll. He was killed the last days of the war. He is pictured on a motorcycle which was his favored mode of transportation.  Coming in 2019, the US Marshalls Museum.
Take what you read about Bass Reeves as being the inspiration for the fictional Lone Ranger with a grain of salt.  Seems to be a creation of a local writer who researched and a wrote a book about it or the inspiration of a PR person to promote tourism.  Still, a good story.

I agree on the "Lone Ranger" credit but, if half the stories about Mr. Reeves are true, he is truly worthy of emulation and sets a moral standard for all.   cooldude

I see no problem with offending KKK members.

So we see no problem with offending folks with whom we disagree.  May I draw the implication you would have a problem offending folks with whom you agree.

That's just not right, friend.

It has nothing to do with agreeing or not. It has to do with right and wrong.

Over two hundred deputies road for Judge Parker. 65 died in the line of duty. Tough men
