I just realized since the flooding started, I haven't seen one jet boat on TV. Evidently they are not popular in that part of the country. It seems most of the prop boats are all being pulled. I've seen a few airboats. Jet propulsion with a flat bottomed aluminum hull would kick butt in those neighborhoods.

While I get the advantage of low draft, they're really not after high speed... Trawling speed is more than adequate when navigating a neighborhood...

Ive owned a few jetboats in the past.  Both inboard and outboard.   And I used them in the 1973 and 1993 floods in the St Louis area.
They have one major flaw in operating in flood areas around homes.
Jets suck water from directly under the boat and as such they will pick up stuff several feet down.  This is more prevalent when operating at slow speeds and when in neutral, since the pump is always moving water.  Things like trash bags, clothes, ropes, long weeds.  And the ditches are full of this trash along the roads.  This will clog the jet intake and get wrapped around the prop shaft.  On a inboard, you have to have the boat out of the water in order to remove the clean out and clear the problem, as the cleanout is below the water line.
On the outboards you can raise the engine to clear the problem.  But it is still a pain in the ask.
Shielded props seem to better operate in these conditions and I have seen some of them on the news in Texas.

excellent points  cooldude hadn't thought about that. About the only time I've had that was with shallow river grasses and near shore kelp beds. I bet there is a lot of trash. As a kid I've been thru Beulah while in San Benito and Celia while in Corpus Christi. Although big hurricanes had relatively little flooding. At least as I remember as a kid.

Somewhat related, now that the waters are receding, images you'd never think you'd see are starting to come out, like a vehicle with prop damage on it's roof...

For a first hand view, this is pretty cool. If you're familiar with the Youtube Gun Guy "Demolition Ranch", he loaded up some tools, some jet skis and headed out to see what he could do, with cameras rolling.

the last floods over here had a few in action, not flat bottom boats though so off the plane they still sit quite deep

I was born in McAllen in '58. Most of my family originated in the Valley. Only to be spread far and wide. You may have known my granddad. Along with being in charge of the maintanence dept. of the Texas Highway Dept. in San Benito he was also a volunteer fireman forever. Lewis Maston. May he rest in peace. We rode out Beulah in my grandparents home. I think it was on Sam Houston Road. Had a big cotton field behind their place that my brother and I would have cotton boll wars.

I was born in 57, and for the first year lived on the corner of Bowie and frontage (San Benito), then migrated to Harlingen a couple of miles away. My grand parents continued to live at that location. Sorry I didn't know your grandpa, pretty incredible for me that your from the Tragic, I mean Magic Valley, small world I guess, my world has been anyway. Still cotton fields everywhere, land is flat as a pancake and only one Valk. that I know of. Hope to ride your way someday, be safe.

Back in the day I used to fish in weed-choked Wis lakes with an outboard with a weed prop.  Not efficient I suppose but that sucker would go through thick weeds, water lilies, anything w/o fouling.  Perfect for flood rescue work I would think.
