One of my favorite all time bands. Love em or hate em (most of my buddies didn't like them), Walter Becker & Donald Fagen were definitely one of a kind. They were different, like a Valkyrie!  -RIP Walter

Whoa, that hit hard. Cry
The Dan.  Great makers of studio music and rare tours.
Creative geniuses, those two.  An American Lennon-McCartney similarity there.
My buddy named his daughter "Aja" back in 1978.

Went to see them way back when. Cow Town Ballroom in Kansas City. They opened for Frank Zappa. About half the crowd left when they were finished. Not sure what Zappa thought about that.

They made some good tunes.

I liked it when they used a bunch of different studio
musicians for guitar parts on different songs, on
the newer albums it seems like all Becker... but
collaboration between Becker and Fagen was what
made the Steely Dan sound... Becker worked on Fagen's
"solo" albums as well...

I believe I have all their albums. Unmistakable and timeless. Sorry he's gone.

Several come to mind.  Some personal faves...

Deacon Blues (my song!)
Hey 19 (been there, done that)
Babylon Sisters (shake it!)
My Old School (did not think the girl could be so cruel)
Any Major Dude...

Precise.  Complex.  Moody.
I dig Steely Dan.   cooldude

RIP Walter

This is the day of the expanding man
That shape is my shade
There where I used to stand
It seems like only yesterday
I gazed through the glass
At ramblers, wild gamblers
That's all in the past

You call me a fool
You say it's a crazy scheme
This one's for real
I already bought the dream
So useless to ask me why
Throw a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line

[Chorus]
I'll learn to work the saxophone
I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel
They got a name for the winners in the world
And I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama the Crimson Tide
Call me Deacon Blues

My back to the wall
A victim of laughing chance
This is for me
The essence of true romance
Sharing the things we know and love
With those of my kind
Libations
Sensations
That stagger the mind

I crawl like a viper
Through these suburban streets
Make love to these women
Languid and bittersweet
I'll rise when the sun goes down
Cover every game in town
A world of my own
I'll make it my home sweet home

[Chorus]

This is the night of the expanding man
I take one last drag
As I approach the stand
I cried when I wrote this song
Sue me if I play too long
This brother is free
I'll be what I want to be

Oh Crap! Another part of my life is gone! This is starting to get depressing seeing all these people I grew up with starting to pass. It just seems to feel that people of Walter's talent are passing and not being replaced. RIP Walter, enjoyed your great talent!

I've had nothing but Steely Dan on Pandora since I heard...... I'm not liking all these actors and musicians that we grew up with, passing away...

It makes me a little nervous.....

Big fan here!  He will be missed.

OSS, the wives, and I saw them a few years back at the Beacon Theater in NYC.  They played a block of nights, each night featuring one of their albums from start to finish, then finished with many fan favorites.

Great band!
