Quotes from international news sources.
"Hurricane Irma is now so powerful it is registering on devices designed to detect earthquakes."
"On Tuesday, the National Weather Service reported the storm had become a Category 5 with sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. That means Irma now ranks among the most powerful hurricanes (as measured by wind speed) ever recorded."
"It's been 25 years since a Category 5 hurricane struck the U.S., and Irma could potentially become just the fourth storm of that strength to barrel into the states."
Although we don't know yet where, to all the brothers and sisters down there in FL, stay safe.
Consider a vacation in one of the other 49.

I'm on the northern Gulf of Mexico in the Florida Panhandle. If I have to go anywhere, I'll head up to Tennessee most likely. Have the wife's sister up there. We'll be keeping a close eye on it for sure....but this far out, lots of things can change before it gets up here.

It appears to be hitting land now and is projected to head up across the middle Keys and center of the state of Florida. This thing is a monster.

I just saw a report that states Iram will be a Cat3 when hitting land in the Continental US.
Still a dangerous hurricane, but if correct, good news.

Agree on the Cat 3 and hoping for a Cat 2 by the time it loses strength over the Southern Bahama bank. The storm is still large enough though to where it can run up the WEST Coast of Florida and yet cause massive storm surge up the EAST coast! It is a huge storm. The News folks are creating full on panic and hyping this one to the max. Central Florida is in full panic mode and Soccer moms are cleaning out the stores as fast as they can. Water was gone yesterday and gasoline shortages already as well. The Keys are being evacuated and South Florida can't be far behind. Thinking today.

We've been watching her ever since she became a hurricane. we watch EVERYTHING that follows that "fran track".
It's been forecasted that we will see SOMETHING here in NC, just don't know WHAT yet. Hopefully just rain and tropical force winds.
everybody in the path - PLEASE be safe !!!

Charley passed right over our house in '04 as a Cat2, did just under $100k damage. Didn't finish repairs until late '05. Where to go, I have no idea. In '04 Rita was still quite strong and able to travel, but now....a trip to the dr. is a major undertaking for her. Just in case, I plan to check with the city to find out where shelters are for those with special needs. Our house is rather unusual for the area, we have a crawl space about 3' high, some areas even deeper. If the area should flood, which I doubt, that will lessen the damage to some extent.

Gas stations out of gas or lines 30 to 40 cars long. Some people are waiting at gas stations for gas when the stations are empty and wont have the delivery until 6 hours later. Water in stores is gone when put out, people are like nuts around here. Some have storm shutters already put up some don't. One guy was driving the opposite way against traffic on a one way busy street with 2 lanes just to get into the gas line. Propane, gas, plywood, water and a few other things, GONE. Hopefully for those not prepared new deliveries will come in and they can get what they need.

That's funny chemtrail or nuke the thing. In all seriousness Joe Bistardi of Weather Bell .com said we should go back to seeding these hurricanes like we did some years back in order to at least weaken them. This guy is as good as it gets in Hurricanes and nailed Harvey and what it would do. He said this one has all the classic features of the two most potent ones he has studied being the one in 1947 and in 1935. I have seen the 1935 one featured on The Weather Channel a couple of times. Ernest Hemingway came in in the aftermath ( place in the Keys) to help out and wrote articles and may have got the gov/t to step up in Weather forecasting. Bistardi has this right now hitting somewhere in the greater Miami area and then going up the coast and then just may smash into NC. Of course this is subject to change. Those down there plan for the worst, pray for the best.

Sorry Jess, you and the other 8 decent people in that area might have to take one for the greater good... (Serious side - Anyone in the path be safe and take it seriously!!!) Not the blow job I've been dreaming about. Most every big storm system down south ends up here, eventually. The wind is usually slowed way down by then, but the rain system tends to stall and circle around this swamp for a few days. More rain the last two summers than in 25 years, which is good. It's raining now. I have a good sump pump and a back up submersible and a big generator to power the whole house. Only down side, our trees each have a bazillion gallons in them, so I'll be cleaning up leaves in the snow. Looters.... pfffft, make my day. Stack them like cordwood. Burn them for heat.

At this point - all I need to do for my preps is to fillup the 5 gallon beer brewing bucket with drinking water and our largest stockpot for hot water. I plan on finishing cleaning out the gutters this week. Plenty of food (both persihable and non) is stocked up.

Latest has Irma hitting Miami, then going up the east coast of FL up to Daytona Beach. Then it goes over the water again and makes another landfall somewhere between Savannah GA and Charleston SC, then on up to the NC mountains / foothills . I'm expecting lots of rain and maybe some wind on Tuesday. Subject to change, of course....

The Keys should be deserted (they're going to be underwater).
Miami and the rest of south FL should be well on the way to being abandoned. If you're not on the road it's probably best to be at least 20 feet above sea level.
I heard a remark on the weather that this storm was large enough to have storm surge on BOTH sides of FL at the same time.

Uhoh... (And yeah, this couldn't be any faker if it were on CNN, but it's still funny.) Well, actually, I've seen some water spouts down here and a few were over inland lakes with gators in residence. Those spouts a couple times were literally strong enough to lift some smaller versions of those dinosaurs out of the water. Can you imagine driving along and suddenly a 3-4' gator smashes your windshield.

Wow Floridians, ya'll need to get this BS law changed! 870.044 Automatic emergency measures.—Whenever the public official declares that a state of emergency exists, pursuant to s. 870.043, the following acts shall be prohibited during the period of said emergency throughout the jurisdiction: (1) The sale of, or offer to sell, with or without consideration, any ammunition or gun or other firearm of any size or description. (2) The intentional display, after the emergency is declared, by or in any store or shop of any ammunition or gun or other firearm of any size or description. (3) The intentional possession in a public place of a firearm by any person, except a duly authorized law enforcement official or person in military service acting in the official performance of her or his duty. Nothing contained in this chapter shall be construed to authorize the seizure, taking, or confiscation of firearms that are lawfully possessed, unless a person is engaged in a criminal act. You know what's disappointing about this? People have had a bunch of warning and yet they think they can ride this out. I understand the "why" the stay, but common sense should say, Get Out. These are the people that will become victims and have no one to blame. Sad! they not only endanger their own lives but the people that will attempt rescue.

I get it - I can support the intent of the law. If you want your guns & ammo - get them before the emergency. Don't commit criminal acts and you can keep them. Seems pretty straight forward to me.
