So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

Covington, TN

« on: September 12, 2017, 05:10:38 AM »

The vast majority of us have cell phones and text.

Personally, I'm not a fan of texting.   I do use text for short conversations.   I do mean short.
If the person I'm communicating with decides to have some long text conversation, I almost always respond with CALL ME.   If they don't, my responses get very short, I terminate the conversation or, if necessary I'll call them.

I have a very low tolerance for text conversations that take more than two or three texts.   It takes so much less effort and time to get a whole lot more information passed back and forth in a call versus a long winded text conversation.   Just the way I see it.   Especially if I'm behind the wheel or on my Valkyrie.   Yeah, I have seen riders texting...........   Roll Eyes   I do my best to get away from them.

If I want to get a hold of the kids I used to have I need to text them.  I am actually not a text or a phone person.  I'll talk plenty if I'm face to face but I've never liked gabbing on the phone.  Kind of funny because when I was growing up my father owned the local telephone company.

Phone for detail

Text for quick info

However if I need to confirm I'm available for a job then it's text or email so everyone has it in writing.

No one speaks to anyone anymore.  It's all for the most part done through social media. A lot is being lost through social media / texting and messenger. But for some it is the only way to stay in contact with long distance friends and family.  This aspect is good but it's still nice to hear someone's voice!
Texting is no different than what this or any other site does. We get to know each other somewhat by texting here. We never get to meet in person unless we attend Inzane or get involved in other VRCC functions.  Its just part of the gig. Sad thing is, social interaction is being lost. Especially for kids unless they become involved in sports or school functions as well. Us older folks (I think) still prefer to be around people. I may be wrong here, but  do we still like face to face conversation.  I know I prefer it. But a bunch of us still have become part of the texting crowd. That is what we do here is texting.

If someone texts me "Call Me!" I've been known to call them, say "Text me" and hang up.

I HATE talking on the phone. Hate hate hate hate hate it. I'll generally accept a phone call from my wife or kids, other than that, you better be in a life threatening situation to warrant a phone call.

I actually checked to see if AT&T could remove voice from my phone and make it data and text only (They couldn't, or at least wouldn't.)

Kids and co-workers forced me into texting.

For short and quick responses it works well.

For more difficult issues I much prefer a conversation.

Usually, a phone conversation is ok.

Some conversations need to be Face to Face.

One thing that I have noticed is that teenagers today seem to have difficulty making eye contact when they speak (if they speak at all).

I blame this on Social Media and Texting.

They each have their own strength and purpose.

I like to have a conversation from time to time.  Maybe the conversation has a specific purpose  but leaves room to raise other topics or just chat.  The telephone call lends itself to that.

If I want to simply send a message that can be dealt with when the receiver gets around to it text works best.  If I want to send to someone who may be in a situation that doesn't allow verbal conversation then text works best.  If I am sending or receiving information that may need to be referred to later or entered in somewhere else, text works best.

To shut off either one is sort of akin to saying one would rather ride a horse all the time than use a motorcycle.

I'd twist your analogy into saying I'd rather ride a motorcycle (Text) than drive a dump truck (Call), but sometimes accept there's a need to drive a dump truck, no matter how painful that might be.

I call that communicating on another media.   My lap top.

Which (IMHO) is totally different than texting on a phone.   Hell, I rarely respond to post that I read while using my phone, if I do, it's always very short.

I also hate writing anything on my phone. Check out an app called MySMS. You install it on your phone, go to a designated webpage on your computer, and it will slingshot texts to/from your phone to the website, so you can rear and most importantly write texts from your computer instead of using the phone keyboard.

I don't have an issue with texting except when it becomes a conversation that becomes obligatory for timely responses.  Texting should be conversations where you reply when you can or when you get around to it.  If it requires constant two-way communication or something timely then call.

I've had text conversations with my brother that stretched days because we understand that we're fitting it in between other things we have going on.  If I don't reply he's not like "hello?", he knows I'll pick it back up when I can and visa-versa.

Texting and phonecalls both have their place, and I use both. I'm not likely to answer a phone call unless I know who is calling (and not just a number - if you want me to answer - send a text with who you are first - otherwise leave a voicemail.) I got my phone for MY convience - I only answer when I'm expecting the call or you're already in my address book.

I generally prefer to talk over the phone than to text (e.g. I can talk through the bluetooth voice system in my car or the bluetooth headset in my helmet, but I can't text).

*But* I understand that there are people who got hearing issues or have trouble with English.

Call, text, email, website forums, fax, telex, snail mail, courier pigeon, or sit down over a coffee face to face....whatever it takes to converse with those I wish to when I want or need to is OK with me. All (well ... maybe not the fax, telex, courier pigeon options Wink) have their benefits in certain situations...

I'm flexible.  Most times texting works best, but sometimes a proper explanation or tone is better conveyed by voice.  My wife knows that if she requires an urgent reply, to phone me, and to leave a voice message if I don't answer.  My parents almost always phone, and my siblings almost always text.

There are a small number of people who I typically regularly see face-to-face, who are almost impossible to get an urgent response from, whether by answering their phone, or by answering a text.  Aggravating.  And it's not like I'm someone who is always calling.  These all happen to be in the under 35 age group.

I'm not old enough to have experience with carrier pigeons, MSB.  And who faxes nowadays, other than travel agents and other spammers advertising their deals?

Agree wholeheartedly. Each has there place. I also agree that I don't have much patience for several rapid texts going back and forth. My kids can all text rapidly with their thumbs. I don't possess this ability and rapidly resort to phone or E mail if much typing is to be done. We largely use texting to communicate at work. It's much better to receive a text when you are elbow deep in greasy metal chips or on a ladder than it is to have your phone ringing while you try to work and ignore it.

Call most of the time.
A short text or two is fine, but I am with most, repeated texting is a pain, I would rather spend a few minutes talking on the phone rather than spending a half hour texting back and forth.

Texting is also very frustrating when you have someone that does not acknowledge a text. You have no way of knowing if they received the text or not, with a phone call, you don't have that problem.

Sometimes my brother and sister and I group text.  When I'm at work and they're not, they can send messages fast and furiously enough that I have to put my phone in my drawer so I don't hear the unrelenting buzzing.

lol ... actually only about a 13 hour drive straight through in good conditions now from our new home...Fort St John is about 80 km up the Alaska Hwy out of Dawson Creek. Heading up there Oct 6 for a visit and do do some serious fishin'  cooldude   BTW...usually about a good 9 month riding season here in Aggasiz, more like "temperate ruggedness" rather than "frozen tundra"
