Just got done with a ride of a couple hundred miles, took most of the day, all on curvy, twisty two lanes here in Kentucky. Filled up with fuel at two of the stops, not because I needed fuel but, we were stopped at convenience stores that sold gas so I topped off. Thought I figured my mileage wrong the first time, 48.8 miles per gallon. Nope, it was figured correctly. Second refueling stop, topped off again with fuel and ice cream. 49.124 miles per gallon and the ice cream was great. Yeah, the roads were twisty/curvy/hilly and we didn't push the envelope. Had a great ride with a group I'm calling the Whiz Kids. Most of our stops were because at least one of us had to go pee. Was a wonderful ride with some great people. You meet the nicest people when you ride a Valkyrie.

Well Charlie, I wasn't going to identify any of the "Whizzers" but, my home always has the welcome mat out for those here this week.

to get much over 40 avg mpg, what did you do pull 2 plugs?
I tried babying my Valk once doing 55 mph all easy driving and could only achieve 40 mpg.
your bike must be super tuned just right?

Couple of weeks ago, a few of us from WI got together for one of those 200 milers, to go grab a burger for lunch... As I recall, John (One Eyed Jack), one of our newest members, got over 45mpg at one stop, with his new to him '98 Standard (I got right about 40mpg). Like the ride the 'Whizzers' did, ours was slow, sub 3K rpm, Kettle Moraine riding. Right before InZane, we all pitched in for a DigiSync , and made sure all the bikes were right where they should be. Black Dog

Well Ron, in a little more spirited riding on Saturday I got 56 mpgs. Also I seem to be getting the handling part down. Really can't wait to put the Avon Roadmasters on and see how a true road tire works on this motorcycle.

I'll have to suggest that it's more about riding technique than any super tuning. I didn't check everyone else's mileage but, one of our riders who was on an Interstate when asked told me he had no idea but, figured it was around 30 mpg. So, we ran his numbers. 120 miles on that tank of fuel, he topped off at 3.2 gallons if I remember correctly. Everyone gets better mileage on "Smell the Roses" rides is my experience. Charlie, As you well know, I rode tail gunner for a lot of that ride, (except for the portion where someone up front got us lost) . I won't go into that but, I found a couple of great roads that got us back on track. I observed your riding style and skills. Won't suggest that the Ural won't handle better with different tires but, you ride like a well oiled machine, consistent and always in the right place.

While I didn't check it myself, one of the "Whizzers" was riding with a side car on his bike. He told me what he got, pretty sure he said almost 40 but, since he was the one leading when we got lost, I most likely wasn't listening very closely cause I was trying to figure out where we were and how to get back on course. More than once I've heard, "You can't get there from here.". Just goes to show you, Rong Way Ron always gets back, I'm simply not sure of where I've been.

I need to get me some of that magic gasoline. I get 25 with my sidecar. 35 without and that's old man riding.

Hooter, It all depends on how one rides and twisting the throttle. I've needed to refuel in less than a hundred miles before. The fat lady can consume vast amounts of fuel if you turn the beast loose. I won't argue that point but, she can also be a fuel miser if one is gentle with the lady's throttle. Been there, done that.

As Hooter said, the right hand controls the beast. Was a great time riding with you. Looking forward to doing it again.

.but I didn't buy the Valkyrie for gas mileage!!!!! Neither did I but, it's nice to know that you can stretch it if you need to. I've been on some cross country rides that the next fuel stop was a stretch for the fuel on board. At least that's what I thought until I proved otherwise.
