Sheriff: Arrest of man with guns 'made all the difference'

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/10/04/sheriff-arrest-man-with-guns-made-all-difference.html

A man caught carrying numerous weapons including two submachine guns and 900 rounds of ammunition had lost custody of his children and written hostile letters to local judges, authorities said Wednesday.

Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said Scott Edmisten won't talk, so officials are still trying to determine why he had the weapons, as well as a mask and black fatigues, when he was pulled over for speeding before dawn Monday.

Graybeal said guns and ammunition are common in Tennessee, but that it was "odd" for all the guns and clips to be loaded, and for Edmisten to have 900 more rounds and survival gear. In addition, he said, when people have survival gear with them, they are usually going hunting, but that didn't seem to be the case. Graybeal said he has asked state and federal agencies to assist in the case since the automatic weapons aren't registered and lack serial numbers.

"Whatever he had planned for that morning, that little traffic stop that one of my guys made made all the difference in the world to someone, I believe," Graybeal said. "It's just one of those situations where nothing seemed right and we wanted to make sure that everyone was OK, especially since he'd been sending letters to the courts."

Edmisten, 43, has been jailed without bond on charges of possessing prohibited weapons, speeding, and felony evading arrest. An attorney listed in court records as representing Edmisten didn't immediately return a call seeking comment. A bond hearing was set for Oct. 11.

In addition to the guns in the car, authorities found another four rifles in Edmisten's home Tuesday while executing a search warrant. Graybeal said one had been altered to make it fully automatic. Investigators also found about $6,000 worth of ammunition that hadn't been opened.

Graybeal said he didn't know why Edmisten lost custody of his children, but Edmisten made it clear he did not like the Department of Children's Services or law enforcement.

Michael Knight, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, has confirmed that the agency is investigating and said authorities "don't see a connection" to recent mass shootings.

Edmisten's arrest came a day after Stephen Paddock opened fire on a music festival from a high-rise hotel suite in Las Vegas, leaving 59 people dead and more than 500 injured. When police stormed his room, they discovered that Paddock had killed himself.

If it hadn't been for the fully automatic weapons, the arrest probably should have been only for the speeding and evading.   Also since the 'clips' were fully loaded they probably were for an M1 or an SKS. (sarcastic font.

I don't know the state's laws concernnig loaded guns in vehicles.

If the man had illegal weapons or illegal modifications to his weapons, then he should be held responsible.   But, this article is obviously written by someone who is not pro-gun.    Why else mention that he doesn't like law enforcement or family services.

We don't know the man's intent.   I'd hate to think that the fact that I have own two K Bars and carry one in each of my trucks would give reason for the court's to order my home searched while I sat locked up in jail.   Yeah, admittedly there is a difference in having a K Bar versus a fully automatic weapon but.....................

The letters written and the weapons he was in possession of in my book prove he had intent. To do something anyway. Wasn't too smart to bring attention to himself after threats were made.

Understood and you may be correct but, my question is more pertaining to the officer that stopped him for speeding.   Doubtful he knew of those letters or his feelings toward law enforcement and family services.   I suspect it may have had something to do with his attitude during the stop.

The copycats started.  Didn't take long.  Pretty sure bump-fire stocks will be outlawed.  No loss really (aiming not effectual; good for "spray & prey" (sic)), other than the "slippery slope" of new laws the 2A community fights, rather than govt enforcing existing ones, while letting the guilty go free to repeat offences. Pelosi again firing up her "assault weapons" rhetoric. When the hell is she gonna go away?

It burns me up to hear all of this BS about 'assault" weapons. The true definition of an assault weapon is 'capable of fully automatic fire"  The AR is a 'look alike' but not an assault weapon, the M-16 is one. The M1 wasn't, the M1 carbine wasn't, the M2 carbine was, along with the BAR.

The 'well qualified press" came up with that definition and the pols like Pelosi and others jumped right on the bandwagon.

Now there is no opposition to a false definition, WE seem to accept it.

Same goes for suppressors, the press has come up with silencers and we accept that too.  Bullets instead of rounds or cartridges. The Press is full of idiotic arseholes and we accept their BS.

The wording of the proposed bill would basically ban any after market trigger. Anything that could make a factory weapon fire faster would be banned (Lighter trigger pull, for instance, could easily fall under the scope of this proposal.)

Not to mention you can build a bump fire board from a 2x4 with a wooden dowel sticking out of it.

Or even your thumb and a belt loop.

I fully agree..the officer had his own circumstances  to deal with.  The letter stuff came in after incarceration I would suppose. Fleeing as stated in the report will typically get you a room at the steel bar hotel by itself. Like I said, guy screwed himself.
