I`ve not used one on a bike yet. But, after driving my wife`s Miata with the GPS I thought one might be handy. But I didn`t want to spend $600 for something I might not like or use. So, i searched around and found a cheap Chinese one that had an earphone jack. I plug my acc. cord into it and recieve the verbal commands thru the intercom system. Works great ! I have $79 into it and $1.00 for a sacrificial cookie sheet I used as a mount.

Well.......that was one detail I left out. I`ve been learning Mandarin Chinese on my days off.

I use a old large screen tom tom I had in my car. Just get a Ram mount for the handle bars. A baggy and a rubber band makes it water proof.

GPS? I think they're great, I've had one for over ten years....best paperweight I've ever used in the shop. Think I've used it twice, but then don't have that much invested in it so it's OK.

I'm using an Arkon GPS handlebar mount - it puts the car GPS into a weather proof case. I also have a power connector  as well

Don't need no steenking gps! You ain't NEVER lost on a motorsickle-think alternate route! Nice innovation dere Rob. Course I ain't above stopping at a handi mart and askin questions!  Been known to write out the route and fergiited where I put it after bout the 2nd or 3d stop.  RIDE SAFE.

I have an old Lowrance GPS that tells you where you are. If I know where I am, I can find my way to where I'm going. I have a Tom Tom in the SUV, for my wife to use when she goes to places she's never been. When I ride, I rarely go anyplace specific, with no real destination in mind. I do like knowing where I am, tho'.

GPS's are tools, and like any tool, are very helpful when used correctly.

I have found countless excellent roads, I would never have found, if I relied on just instinct and a map.

Nice fab job Rob, if you like using the gps, you could update the cookie sheet to maybe a skillet sheet or a real after market gps holder.

I have an old Garmin that I like to use. Seldom use to help me navigate but it has a screen that shows mph in large numerals, max speed attained, distance traveled, travel time moving, travel time stopped. Not really necessary information but entertaining when you're bored. Never used it on the bike but that could change one day.

Most of the "car" or cheap GPS are not water proof. Yea a baggie will work. Most also will not allow you to down load a route to them. I have used one with my route sheet taped to the gas tank. I have an old Street Pilot from '98. Garmin hasn't supported it for over 10 years. Usually I'm making a line across the screen. It tells me where I am relative to a major road or town.

Well, I decided I liked it well enough on a recent trip that I'd use it. No more ghetto. Sprung the $80 for a proper mount.



Had to get the larger Ram mount due to the 7" screen.

GPS's are great. put in the destination and go into the setting and set it for the shortest distance instead of the fastest. You will find some great roads you didnt know existed and the ride is much more relaxing.

Put a Tom Tom GPS on my Valkyrie a few years ago.   Won't suggest that I haven't used it to find a destination but, generally don't use it much.   Where it comes in useful is after a good ride and I end up in the middle of no where, I have turned it on to find my way back to civilization.

I have an old iPhone 3. No GPS, but we've used my wife's phone for GPS just fine. I figured for $79 it was worth a shot. Funny the RAM mounts were more than the Chinese GPS.

RAM Mounts aren't cheap but they are good.

I use the "where to" feature on my old Garmin to find gas stations and restaurants.  It'll point out places of interest, recreation, post office, hospital etc and tell how far away.  Very useful finding gas stations.

That was the biggest reason why I wanted one that would talk to my headset. I don't need anymore distractions.

On my way to Inzane in Morgantown, WV I decided to take a meandering route through WV.

My phone couldn't get cell signal and my old GPS kept trying to put me back on the interstate.

I had to stop at three different stores before I found one that had any maps for sale.
