unfortunately, it's a liberal paper and the letter might get 'edited' or not printed. I included being a vet to hopefully soften the S*** replies that I might get.
Here is is original. What is funny is that we have 0ver 300 members in our rifle club, none of them, as far as I know, have written letters. I guess that preaching to the choir is enough.
I have noted a number of letters to the editor suggesting how to create more gun control. While I won’t take issues with wordsmiths or persons not familiar with firearms, I will mention a few things. First, I am a Korean War Vet, a NRA life member and have been an instructor in firearm safety for over 50 years. Second, I have knowledge of the meaning of the 2nd Amendment. One person has suggested that we should have more ‘common sense’ gun laws. “Common sense” gun laws ( Latest count, over 20,000 of them) are the buzz words of the gun control people. Let’s talk about gun laws.. California, one of the strictest anti gun states, has a murder rate of 3.25% per 100.000 population. Utah, one of the least oppressive gun law states, has a murder rate of .97 per 100,000. These are not NRA statistics but Brady Coalition statistics. Brady is the gold standard for antigun issues. I won’t mention the gun violence statistics in a city like Chicago or the District of Columbia. Both have exceedingly strict gun laws. The same person has ‘ideas’ about more gun laws..... 10 round clips . That’s been tried, it did nothing and has lapsed without renewal.. By the way, clips and magazines are often confused by the gun misinformed. Background checks.. Already in place. No you can’t buy a firearm as easily as groceries. Gun owners licensed, registered, and must have insurance... Invasion of privacy and illegal under the 2nd amendment. The 2nd Amendment is a RIGHT just as the 1st Amendment is. Maybe journalists, TV pundits, and writers should be registered too (It has been suggested here in Indiana). After all, The Pen is mightier than the Sword, LOL. The same person suggested another ‘idea’. Accessories to change a semi auto firearm to “nearly’ full auto. I would like to point out that the NRA has asked the ATF to review, for legality, the item in question that was allegedly used by the insane shooter in Vegas. The word ‘accessories’ could open the door for more dishonest skullduggery. Another person has , in his opinion, said that the 2nd Amendment doesn’t really mean the ‘people’ . He says that it has a qualified meaning. According to him, the term ‘militia’ means the National Guard. That is wrong. The individual states National Guards can be brought under Federal control by the POTUS. That flies in the face of the meaning of the 2nd amendment. However, as we all should know by now, people (we) and journalists lie. Do not take my word for it. Look up in the public record Federalist Paper No. 46. The Federalist Papers were essentially letters to the editor written by three of our founding fathers. Hamilton wrote the 46th. He was the author of the 2nd Amendment. His ‘letter’ explained the checks and balances to a group who were reluctant to create a Federal government. The 46th was written in flowery but understandable English as to the intent of the 2nd amendment. An understanding of that ‘letter’ would immediately give the reader the knowledge that the National Guard was not meant to be the ‘militia’
