So many colors to choose from yet so few stand out

The annual Orionid meteor shower, composed of debris from repeated passages of Halley's Comet, runs from Sept. 23 to Nov. 27. It peaks between midnight and dawn on Oct. 21 under a dark, moonless sky. This shower produces 10 to 20 fast meteors per hour (40 to 50 per hour depending on where you are located) and many of them are bright. The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but they will be traveling away from the radiant above the bright red star Betelgeuse in Orion, which rises in the east after 10 p.m. local time and climbs to its highest point a few hours before dawn.

(Orion, the constellation from which this shower's meteors appear to radiate from, will be high in the sky about 2 hrs before dawn on Oct 21st)

They'd get a better turnout for these if they didn't hold them so late.

 Grin Grin

Nature's a b**ch like that.  First, an eclipse in the middle of the week, now a meteor shower in the middle of the night.

She cares not that we have jobs and such.

If there is a good late movie running I might be available for that time slot. I recall a number of years ago my wife and a good friend of hers were talking about it, her friend got all excited and wanted to watch the show. She was a beautiful blonde woman, looked like a 40 year old Barbie, and reminded me of the quintessential blonde poster child, could make a statue look smart. She could talk for an hour and say nothing....but I digress. I told her it was either that night when we were discussing it, or had been the night before but she needed to check to make sure. So what did she do....called 911 for information.  crazy2 She ended up getting out a couple lawn chairs for herself and one daughter, grabbed a couple blankets and a camera, then set up out in the middle of the golf course she lived on. They sat there until 5:00am, unbelievable. She breathlessly told us all about the two or three big ones she saw that came in over the house, said she could actually hear them sizzle as they passed. I didn't have the heart to tell her it was a Roman candle I had left over. My wife never forgave me for making fun of her friend.

I caught a clear view of an early bird in this year's series two nights ago coming back from all places, the plant where our Valkyries were made.   Late night very bright bluish tone and looked to burn out about a few hundred yards high and  probably landed on an Amish Farm on State Rt. 47 between Bellefontaine and Sidney, OH.  The thing is they are extremely difficult to judge the altitude.  It could have been a few miles high and brightness can make it seem so close - I can not tell.

Saw a few early this morning, was out between 0400-0600 trying to get a pic. Didn't get one this time. It was beautiful out too, clear. I'll go out again tonight/early morning and try again. I'm shooting 30 second long exposures, they seem to always come by right after you hear the shutter close.
