Beautiful day yesterday, balmy 60F and off we go in a ride.
Finished the day with near 170miles logged in the odometer, not too shabby all things considered (left home 12PM and was back 5PM, refueling only took about 3.9 gallons, average of 43mpg). Mind you that included a stop for lunch in a nice Italian restaurant in Ben Lamond (CA) where I had a nice steak.
I have a weekend route that starts in Sunnyvale, heading north through CA-280 and next to CA-92 turning to the Skyline Blvd (CA-35), CA-09, Santa Cruz and up north through the Pacific Route (CA-01), heading next through La Honda and back to the CA-280.
It has a little bit of high speed highway, lots of curvy roads in the mountains crossing redwoods forest and the return following the Coastal line.
Up in the Woodside (CA) mountains in the Skyline blvd was a bit chilly (lowest temperature about 48F) but overall a pretty nice ride.
Only unexpected event happened in Santa Cruz, while leaving the town to follow the Pacific Route (CA-01) going North. A small pickup truck decided to leave a gas station and cross both lanes, heading to a parking lot.
The old fart crossed my way but I managed to slow down to avoid a collision, I guess the fact that I was doing 30miles/h and the CBS (Combined Breaking System) in my ST1300 saved the day.
Thought about going after him and giving him a piece of my mind but realized that I still had 70 miles to go and just about 1h of sunlight.
Have this in video, will upload it soon to youtube.
I'm considering the idea of installing some auxiliary lights in the ST1300, like I have in the other bikes (fog lights in the I/S and LED Rigid Industries spotlights in the vstrom).
Cheers

Snowbirds are back in force here also. Be careful. They are out to get us.

Just last week, had two young'ns got killed because of a left turner they t boned on their bike. I knew one of them and his father well.
Additional lighting always helps IMHO but, defensive riding is the key, don't trust anyone to see you. They aren't looking...................

Where did you mount the camera? Turns out it's just thirty seconds of staring at someone's back. ???

Generally I ride with 2 cameras, one mounted in the trunk and another mounted in the front fairing.
This day (Murphy's law), the front facing camera battery was dead. :-|

That is exactly right. Defensive riding is the KEY. You can't trust anyone to see you. Even if they are looking right at you. Here is a video (Awareness Test. A PSA from the BBC) that shows that very thing. When you watch this keep in mind that it is important to get the count right. Very enlightening. https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr=chrf-yff56&hsimp=yhs-009&hspart=mozilla&p=awareness+test#id=1&vid=6d3abec9d4b7f608ac7e3e9e4960aa1f&action=clickYou also have to realize that you need to ride your machine, whatever it is, with techniques that you will use for "panic" situations all the time. With less intensity in the normal course of riding but the techniques like using the front brake as your primary brake all the time. Knowing that green only means go, not go safely. Recognizing traffic patterns at intersections. Knowing that you can't be seen. This takes practice. On every ride. How you manage a panic situation will determine whether you get through it unscathed or in an ambulance. Your instinctive reaction must the right one. You don't have time to think about it. Most riders I know around these parts would slam on the back brake and lose control in a panic situation. Savago showed how it is done.

Constant practice and thinking about emergency procedures and situational awareness has saved me more than once. It's also why I will never again touch alcohol when riding - I do not have the control I feel I need if I indulge.
