Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: December 17, 2017, 08:56:27 AM »

I’ve known all along that I simply wasn’t cut out to be a Yankee. It’s not a cultural thing, of course, and not entirely a winter temperature thing either; although, that does factor-in indirectly. It’s all that goes with winter and the cold that tends to disqualify this tender soul from membership in the ranks of northern folk.

Besides the obvious challenge of maintaining body heat and allowing normal bodily functions to perform properly, there are the spin-off effects… With winter comes frozen precipitation, and with that comes salt, brim, sand, and other road treatments that seriously discourage bike riding… for months on end! That’s the part above all else that cuts me out of the picture all together! I’m so spoiled that going ride-less for even a few days leaves me antsy and all out of sorts… Several months without ever mounting our girl would most likely drive me completely around the bend!

I have spent a couple of winters outside dear ol’ Dixie, courtesy of Uncle Sam… I hadn’t discovered the magic of serious bikery at that time, however, so it didn’t occur to me that dimension even existed. But, now I know! And, now I am even more grateful to our Maker that my roots reside in the rich potting soil of the land that also yields cotton, tobacco, moss in trees, and provides a haven for large reptiles, small mammals, and folks who speak with a distinct drawl… Home, sweet home… A place where riding can occur virtually any ol’ time!

I could and would adapt, of course, as any human would, to the surroundings and do what it took to survive, perhaps even to flourish, in a different environment, but… given my druthers… I’m content with my present lot, and I have no intention of making any major changes. Naturally, I do enjoy visits up north, and I manage to go there often… but never in the dead of winter! No changes in that are anticipated, either… That said…

I’m sitting here chomping at the bit to get back out yonder… only… winter is throwing a curve ball at me again… Yep, even down here, conditions can arise that can cause me to… delay or adjust riding plans… I have a doctor appointment Tuesday, for example, but rain is in the forecast… both where I am and where I’m going… I’d resigned myself to having to take my car this time, but… dang-it-all! I’d much rather be astride ALI…

I’m thinking at the moment I’ll call tomorrow and see about changing my appointment. I might need some sort of lame excuse, possibly, but I doubt it. I’ve never been asked for one before, but I do like to be prepared just in case… I’m reluctant to just level with the folks, so… Heck! I’m not going to lie either, so… I’ll just resort to vagueness, if I have to… Yeah, that’s the ticket… Am I in danger of becoming politician-like here? To deliberately mislead with statements that aren’t technically untrue? Wonder if they might know what the definition of 'is' is...?

I’m ready to begin a winter riding campaign… Naturally, that means a trek westward, as just a very short distance east and south of here lies an ocean, and north of here lies serious winter and all its implications. No problem with west, however, and there is so much to explore between here and another ocean impediment that establishes our other geographic boundary.

Central Florida is a long way from anywhere. Not a real problem for this retired and foot-loose campaigner, but out of the way from where I’ll be at the doctor’s office… Again, not a major inconvenience, but… That’ll also mean a few more days of being ride-less… If only the rain wasn’t coming when and where it is predicted to be… I am holding out hope, however, that like so many times before, that forecast might change by tomorrow… and with it my choices! I have my fingers crossed… I wish I had a rabbit’s foot to stroke right now, too…

Bruce, you talk about Florida often... do you know how to ride through
there on "nice" roads, or do you just submit to traffic?

They poured the salt slurry on the roads around here 8 days ago.  I have not seen any snow since last spring but the salt brine is already down this year ... just in case I guess.  And I am living well below that Mason Dixon line.  I really hate getting my bike out on that salt crap but just had to go for a ride yesterday anyway.

Make adjustments as you need to my friend and enjoy that ride west.  I know you will.

Started the Valk and moved it outside the garage so it could run at 2000 rpm for about 7 minutes. Unfortunately the snow has partially melted and I put my foot down on slippery ice just about 4 feet past the garage door.   The roads are still full of salt and lots of ice spots and black ice spots

Yowza My hip was talking to me for a few hours  lol

Was really hoping on Wed I can get the bmw started and for a little ride but not looking good with freezing rain again in the forecast  Wondering if the bmw battery is on the way out as its 7 yrs old
You can turn off the headlights on the bmw so if it fails to start that way I will know its time to order another yuasa battery

Maybe I should just cry uncle and hook up the battery tender jr

Did see one motorcycle out a few days ago in the Bronx. Crotch rocket rider in full leathers and full face helmet

Us Yankees can't pile the miles on like you do Bruce.  But when you have to park the Valk for four to five months a year, the miles we do put on are that much more enjoyable.  This time of year, friends and family ease the depression that might set in.  I'll have to start the annual maintance, inspection and enhancement routine on my '98 Tourer in the near future.  That activity retains my sanity, but don't talk to my wife, Susan, about that.  She may/will have a different opinion...

Mike,

The short answer is... YES! To all the above... There are, surprisingly, some nice roads to ride down here, but you have to pay attention to what you're doing... I try to avoid urban centers, anywhere in the shadow of Mickey Mouse, and the 'Gold Coast'... which is basically anywhere along the entire east coast of Florida south of Port Orange! The vast majority of my riding down here is north of I-4 and west of I-95. I avoid Interstates whenever possible and large cities/towns... A little map work and route planning can produce some really fine riding, but it can turn ugly quickly if you wander onto a major thoroughfare... Any road is subject to having the dreaded 'blue-hair' drivers appear, so do keep a sharp eye out for those!!!

Jerry,

I hear ya, man! Weather-wise I almost always stay south of I-40 in winter-time and I prefer to stay north of I-70 in summer. That said, it's become rather bothersome to even venture north of I-20 in winter anymore, precisely because, like you said, of the road treatment being employed so lavishly and universally up your way these days! Oh well... at least we have the desert out yonder to go for a spiritual rescue! That is, some of us do... others... ummmm, they have my sympathy, if that counts for anything...

Challenger & Daniel,

Yep. It's a left-over item from my recent sedentary period when I also owned a house. I made a half-hearted effort to sell my car when I sold the house, but nothing materialized... So, mostly it just remains parked in my land-lady's garage and depreciates... I doubt I've put even a thousand miles on it in the past year! She takes it for a spin once in a while, but... I do need to get rid of it, but I really haven't been 'home' long enough to take care of that...

Paul,

That's exactly what I'm talking about!!! I must say I admire you and all those who endure 'winter' and extended periods of no riding... You must have nerves of steel and the patience of 'Job'... I, on the other hand, am probably a little too delicate to survive for long in that predicament... I've been cooped-up for nearly a week now, and I'm already gittery and anxious!

DDT

Evan,

That's another thing! Not sure my ol' bod could stand up to frozen precip and the slips & falls that automatically go with it! I vaguely recall a couple of those way, way back yonder a few decades ago... I barely made it then, doubt there would be any hope at all now! I wish you well... you only have three or four more months and you'll be right back out there again! I have a couple of days at most, so... I think I'll keep things for myself this way, actually!

DDT

BobB,

Yeah, 'sanity' is a relative thing, for sure... Many times I would have considered myself to be just fine on that score, only to discover my 'ex' saw things entirely differently! I've, according to most who've known me, lived pretty much on the thin edge of that condition most of my life... I'm confident your winters would be the gentle nudge needed to push me right over the edge!

DDT

Dennis,

We all do what we have to do, my brother... I feel for ya, but... I just can't get there myself! That's only because I don't need to, though... If things were different, I'd most likely do exactly what you're doing... Mercifully for this dude, a serious ride is squarely in my crosshairs, and a departure date is looming large later this week... Ummm, I do have this doctor scheduling stuff to deal with, though... So, maybe I'm being a tad premature in announcing my 'ride plans' just now... We'll see...

Bruce,

For me right now it is my journals. The memories of great and not so great rides (well I don't remember having many not so great rides). I've been concentration right now on the Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming rides of the mid  to late 70's. No fairings or saddlebags. Just a ditty bag, a one man mountain tent, and a wool blanket. Old school adventuring under the stars.

As far as Florida I concentrated around the Inverness, Floral City and the west coast areas where my mom and dad use to live. Last time down there it was all developed now.

Ride safe my friend.

Charlie,

Yeah, Florida continues to fill up and the urban sprawl is creeping ever northward... Oh well... with mild winters and A/C for the summers, it's no wonder folks want to migrate that way... Florida is sometimes referred to as 'Heaven's waiting room', and there is ample justification for that!!!  I nowadays prefer the wide-open spaces of the west...

In fact, I'm headed west as I write this! We have some nasty looking weather coming our way, so I'm trying to hurry up and get through most of it and south of the ugliest part... Probably take a route down through Victoria and Beeville, TX, then westward towards Alpine and Marfa... No set plan, per se, just watching the weather forecast and adjusting as I go... I hope to see you out here again soon...
