And, go ahead with all bragging rights in full force, as you proclaim your expertise in matters of trouble-shooting and Valkyrie wrenching! It turns out you were right, and the oil leak on our girl was indeed the front crankshaft seal. Dennis replaced it and no more leak!!! Thanks for the advice...

danged cheap made in Ohio crankshaft seal was ONLY good for 500,000 plus miles?   2funny 2funny

Awesome that Dennis got her back to purring (she was purring before, just a few puddles right?) and that John diagnosed you from afar

With weather warming up down south you should be in for more good times down the road

Give Dennis and Sheila our best regards, dont eat too many of those pralines !

OK, I'll have to admit it here in front of everyone.....I originally suggested the front camshaft seal on the left side, not the crankshaft seal. That said, I guess it at least pointed Dennis' nose in the right general area so he could pinpoint the crank seal. Depending on the amount of the leak, I'm wondering if it might have compromised either/both the belts.

My personal experience in that area was quite recent. I had just changed the valve stem seals on the 1200 and unbeknownst to me had dislodged the front cam seal on the left side. When done with the valve seals, I started the bike....it ran fine and after a few seconds I noticed first a dribble followed by a torrent of oil coming from under the timing belt cover. Think "Valdez oil spill." It involved pulling the radiator to gain access to the belt covers, removing oil soaked new belts, the left cam sprocket, and the left portion of the cam cover that bolts to the front of the head behind the sprocket, and a couple hours cleaning the oil spill inside that area on the engine. Installing a new seal and gasket, the cover behind the sprocket, sprocket, another new set of belts from O'Reilly's, the joy of setting the timing(used my homemade sprocket holder), front belt covers, finally the PITA radiator. Started the bike and rolled it out to the driveway and let it run while I addressed the mess on the floor. Cleaning up the oil took almost as long as the repairs but a new bag of kitty litter helped. When I bought the litter, I picked up two bags and the checkout girl casually asked "two cats?"  "No, one big one.....me." She looked at me kinda funny then said "I don't understand."  So I told her "it's simple, I don't like to stop what I'm doing in the shop to run into the house to use the bathroom.....this really helps." Poor girl, she's probably telling all her friends about this weird guy she met at the supermarket. Life is kinda fun at times.  Evil

Hey DDT, was that seal replaceable from the front of the motor without splitting the case?  I assume by removing all the belts and pulleys and such.

Are you sure?  Check the packaging.  I'll bet that it says "Made In Japan".  Like 90% of all the original parts.  They were made elsewhere and assembled in Ohio.

Jeff,

Correct! No case splitting... just removal of belts, pulleys and such, as you speculated... I learned a lot by watching this operation... I still couldn't do it myself, but I do have a better understanding of the process... See? Another silver-lining!

Oss,

On this trip alone, I've had several Harley riders proudly tell me of all the miles they've gone without an engine replacement or overhaul... usually around or just over 100K. I just nod approvingly and tell them that's impressive for a Harley... They never ask about our girl, so I don't volunteer the info. Ignorance is bliss, it's been said, so I recon I'm just spreading the bliss...  We both leave the exchange happy with our choices...

John,

FWIW, Dennis did replace both cam seals, too... precautionary, not out of need... He's a real 'thinker', you know...! He figured they were the same age as the crank seal (OEM), and as long as we were already that far into the process... and as long as he had them on-hand, too...

I truly appreciate you sharing your expertise with us. Dennis would have found it anyway, because he is just that good, but... you bothered to offer your advice too, and that is significant... Anyway, thanks a ton for being you and for always being positive and helpful!
