I didn’t miss not watching the SuperBowl but I did wonder if there were any really memorable commercials last night.

After years of hyping superbowl commercials before the game, only for the great majority to fall flat in my opinion the commercials were much better this year.  Very clever I thought.  I guess my favorite was the Sprint commercial with robots laughing and mocking the doctor.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=9&v=XHpEJRsHefM

Now there were way to many commercials, quite possibly more than any other superbowl or so it seemed to me.  I think I know why and then perhaps I am wrong.

Great game for the offensive minded.  1 punt, most total combined yards ever in a playoff, and maybe in any NFL game ever.  Tom Brady's offense put up over 600 yards and still lost.  Foles was terrific. After Foles being sub par in the season's final two games, Doug Pederson went back to 2014 to see what made Foles good that year.  Pederson then tailored the Eagles offense to his abilities and swept through the playoffs.  This is a mark of a really good coach, no doubt.  Interesting that the play that probably won the game for Philly was an ex Michigan man, Brandon Graham getting to an older Michigan man, Tom Brady to cause the fumble.

Very entertaining game, indeed!

In Canada, we don't get all the ads that the US gets, so we have to rely on the internet and news reports about the best/worst ads of the Super Bowl.

Being a Stranger Things fan, I loved this series of ads for Tide, featuring David Harbour, who plays Chief Hopper on the show:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6gGXnE1Dbh0

The Dodge truck ad that used a recording of part of one of MLK's sermons DID play in Canada, and it hit a sour note for me the moment I saw/heard it.  Using a sermon that quotes Jesus, "He that is greatest among you shall be your servant," from Matthew 23:11 to sell something on TV (or through any medium) is unimaginably tone-deaf.  Dodge and their ad agency should have kept reading in Matthew, the next verse (12), "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted."  If they had done just a little research, they would have found irony in what MLK had to say about advertisers and the vanity they promote:

You must have been watching on CTV instead of an American channel, or your provider didn’t drop the sub as they should have. There were no simsubs this year (CRTC ruled last year that we didn’t have to do them for the game).

Yep, it was one helluvagame.....I guess there's a reason Brady's a QB and not a receiver......lol

Philly played hard, they were fast and their defense was top notch.

Maybe they'll meet again, soon. Payback's a bitch....

Yeah, I was watching CTV and didn't even try NBC.  I was unaware CRTC changed the rules.

It was ironic how Brady missed the catch and later Foles makes catch for a TD. They have nothing to be ashamed of. They played a great game. Along with the poise of Foles, I was very impressed with the guts of their coach.

That ad was in very poor taste. You would think as much money as they spend on these things, they would think it thru a little better.

The half-time show with Justin Timberlake was a disappointment.  When he sang "I Would Die 4 U" as a duet with a recording and projection of Prince, it just underlined for me how he paled in comparison with Prince's 2007 Super Bowl performance (see YouTube link, below).  The marching band towards the end of Timberlake's performance impressed my daughter with their playing and choreography, however.

I decided to watch the national anthem and then make up my mind

If I saw anyone kneeling I would turn it off, if all standing I would watch

Well I DVR'd it as I had to drive my daughter and son in law to the train station so they could get back to Manhattan.  Had the game on FAN and heard the 1st touchdown.  Saw the play where Foles caught the pass/   Refs did not throw this game, for a change.

Since my voice was gone by the end I suppose it was a quite a great game indeed.

That's funny Oss,
I told my wife exact same thing. If I saw anyone not standing during the anthem I was turning it off.
Glad they all stood as it was an excellent game.

I’m not in the market for a new truck. But if I was, I think I would not be looking at Dodges due to that ad.

As far as the ads and the halftime show. I think our culture is passing me by. The only one I found halfway amusing was Danny Devito getting hit by the bus.

I didn't have a dog in the fight, but was happy for Philly. They did exactly what they had to do to win and what a gutsy call on 4th down with the pass to Foles. Genius call, favorite call of the game. Overall, I think it was one of the best games I remember watching. Undecided until the final horn.  cooldude

I was not impressed with that Dodge ad, not sure why they would do that.  But Dodge is owned by the Italians now , right?

I am impressed with my 2003 Dodge Dually Diesel.

Best truck I've ever owned.

My buddy has a 2017 and it's really nice.

Yes, the Dodge ad was in poor taste.  I don’t think Dr. King would have wanted his words used to sell trucks.  But yet, we are talking about it aren’t we.  So in an odd way it is a very effective ad.

The Tide commercials in my opinion were the best by far.  A series of Tide ads sprinkled throughout the game that initially hid the sponsor and then sprung it on the audience.  So then as a new commercial came on I always wondered if it was a Tide commercial for a few moments . . . Brilliant!

And the game was a winner too, well worth the watch.

David,

I've got to say, that is a beautiful stadium. If I ever found myself up that way during the season I'd love to catch a game there. Hopefully it won't be -2 when I'm there.....
