Anybody have their homeowners insurance with Progressive? We've had our auto and homeowners insurance with the same company for years and it just seems to keep going up.
While I was on the phone with Progressive adding a new bike they suggested we get a quote from them for auto and homeowners coverage which my wife did a couple of days ago. Overall, we could save a grand a year by putting everything with Progressive.
I've had one claim with Progressive on a motorcycle and was very pleased with them. However, before making the change we'd like to know if anybody uses them for homeowners insurance and if so, are you happy with them.
Thanks in advance, Mike

I switched everything from farm bureau to progressive except the house. We have our insurance and taxes escrowed into our monthly payment so i did not want to switch it and screw that up. I have no idea how hard it is to switch. Probably not hard at all. I saved a ton by switching the vehicles. I pay less for our 3 vehicles and the bike than i paid for just my truck at farm bureau. Same coverage also. Sorry i can't help with the home insurance.

You do know that a claim on a bike will affect your umbrella cover and may drive up total premium costs?

I’m beginning to ask the same question. My auto and homeowners with Farm Bureau is beginning to get out of hand. I have had some homeowner claims so maybe that’s the answer but I still need to look around some. I cancelled insurance on the bike since it hasn’t been ridden in over two years.

I carry Progressive on my bikes but have auto and home with Travelers. Better coverage and half the price of Alfa which I had since I turned 16. No claims and price went up every year..

I have Progressive on the bike, at the suggestion of my LOCAL, INDEPENDENT agent. They checked and found it to cover the most for the least dollars, at least for me. Just this week as I was paying my 2018 renewal fee, I called and asked if they had roadside assistance and/or trip interruption insurance available. They did, and added it for a whopping $15/year! ($500 maximum paid out per event, which doesn't affect the other coverage.)
I have insured my business, home and vehicles, including business truck/trailer, through them with Pekin Ins. Co. as the carrier for the past eighteen years. Always been happy with them and get treated right when a claim needs to be made. I can't stress enough: a family-owned, independent insurance company. I'm insurance-ignorant, as my father was always my "agent" until his death over twenty years ago. He took care of everything insurance-wise for me all of my early life, so I didn't learn anything myself except this: use a local independent agent, like my dad, as when things really go south you've got someone you know and whose office you can go to. I don't want to be talking on the phone with some faceless person who doesn't know me, who I've never even been to lunch with, when I'm in a fix. I want to be able to call "Bob" on his cell phone at any hour and know that if he doesn't answer, his message provides the information for me to get me help NOW. That is what I define as "insurance". It's knowing, not hoping. Good luck!

Sorry, meant to add:
For those that didn't understand what I meant when I stressed having an independent agent, it means that the agent represents YOU, not just the insurance underwriter. My agent doesn't just represent one company and only reps their products. He researches out what insurance company has the best policy for MY needs, regardless of which (reputable) company provides it. I believe that when the chips are down, they also fight harder for you than if they have already "sold their soul" to XYZ Insurance Company. At least, that's how my Dad explained it to me.

If you are a (honorably discharged) veteran, get a quote from USAA.
I've been with them over thirty years, have tried to shop for better rates/coverage. Once the competing company finds out the competition is USAA, they quit trying. Have actually had two different agents/reps tell me they can't compete with USAA.
Been so long since I asked but it used to be you had to be a officer to get USAA insurance, then I heard they invited NCOs to join. One never knows if a they don't ask.
USAA won't insure your Valkyrie though. They have a size limit on motorcycles.

I have USAA on my autos. USAA farms their motorcycle insurance out to Progressive but with a special rate for USAA customers. They have NO problem with insuring the Valkyries.

Progressive will insure the Valkyrie. And yes, Progressive is where USAA will guide a big bike rider to but, you will NOT get a Valkyrie insured by USAA is all I'm saying. Edited: Does anyone know if USAA will insure E4 and below? In all the years I've been riding, I've never had a claim with Progressive so, I can't speak to their service or what might happen after a claim but their rates are competitive. Rams

It's been a long time since I checked but as I remember, they used to ensure below the 750cc level but that was long ago. I'm sure the policies and requirements have changed with time. When I rode the 78 KZ1000 USAA insured it but would not insure the Valkyrie years later. Rams

True, but perhaps not. I learned the hard way that an independent agent, can represent himself first Yes, he can sell multiple companies, but he can also pad the bill. When I was 16 I got bike insurance through an independent. It was Dairyland, the motorcycle division of Sentry Ins. and every year it went up $20-$30 more than for people getting their Dairyland policy through other agents. Thing is, I didn't know that until later, when I'd switched to American Family through an AmFam agent. Within a year I'd run into other riders with Dairyland and they were all paying less than I had been, and they all had bigger/faster bikes than my DOHC 450 Honda. I called the indy agent they went through, and it was WAY lower than the indy I'd been with, and a little lower than Amfam. Seems my agent just kept adding to the bill and I was too young & dumb to check around every 6 months.

I got a home quote with Progressive not bad price but no experience, sorry I cannot help. But, I have a local mutual insurance company for stand alone home insurance being cheapest I can find. ONLY issue with the local mutual insurance company is the MAX limit on my house is 165K and not a penny more. Most others set a cap say of 165K but if the rebuild cost goes above that, they allow 20% over say set limit of 165K. One thing ticks me off with Progressive is my 5 cycles cannot in WI be insured under one policy, the limit is ONLY 4 cycles onto 1 policy in WI. They told me they are working on getting rid of the 4 limit per ONE policy in WI but no word yet. Reason ticks me off is if I insure my cheapest 1200 dollar scooter/cycle under stand alone policy the premium is MORE than say my 7K worth honda valkyrie with the 3 other bikes on that policy. DUMB if you ask me. How can a 1200 dollar cycle cost more to insure than a 7K cycle same insured coverage? Bunch of B.S. if you ask me and I told Progressive that as well. I think if I recall that Progessive in some states outsource even home owners insurance. Never filed a claim in my life and sure hope not either home or cycle, except for the no deductible rock chip in windshield repair which still goes on your record for 3 years as a reportable accident even though with all the road salt crap they put on WI roads is hard to avoid a rock chip in front windshield every 1-2 years.

I went through an independent agent for my first bike. I can't remember the agent, or the company he put me with, though I do remember roughly where the office was. But I remember my first motorcycle policy was around $26.50 or so. I can't remember if that was 6mo or a year. I was 17, and I do remember I could afford it, and paid cash. Circa 1970. It was along time before widespread credit cards, and I didn't have a checking account either. What's the last time you paid cash for your bike ins?

I haven't have a bad experience with them, I have a bad attitude about them. Any company that funnels million and millions to left wing wingnuts (and causes) gets no money from me. Since their left wingnut CEO stepped down, I don't know if they are still doing it, but they did it enough with him to boycott them forever, regardless of their rates or service quality. Additionally, when any company puts up TV commercials, for years and years, which irritate me greatly, I won't buy their products.

I guess you have 1K to blow more per year than some of us? Price is not everything, but is in my top 2 for sure.

I've had a paperwork issue with Progressive that has cost me some extra $$.
When I set the policy up I set my liability limits much higher than the state minimum.
I chose uninsured / underinsured motorist with lower limits than the liability (VA does not require this coverage).
Progressive insisted on a signed waiver for coverage that was less than the liability.
When they didn't get it in time to suit them they raised the limit to equal my liability and raised the rate $300 / yr.
When I complained they gave me a run around.
I asked them how they could punish me for a coverage that wasn't even required by VA they kept stating that in order to have a Progressive policy in VA you must have uninsured / underinsured coverage.
When I said, so even though VA doesn't require it Progressive does?
They kept repeating their original statement.
Even when I asked them point blank to verify that even though VA doesn't require it they do.
They continued to repeat their original statement word for word.
I know that it's semantics, but I found it very odd that they wouldn't actually use the word REQUIRE.

When I got run over the bike was totaled by the parts manager / service manager at the dealership. This accident I wad in took place on the xway. I took a hit in the ass by a pickup doing an estimated 65 mph. I was almost stopped, in first gear with the clutch pulled in. I was in the passing lane of a 3 lane highway. A red vehicle was stopped in the passing lane just past an emergency turn around. I had no place to go so I opted for the emergency turn around. I got off the xway on the approach to the turn around, down shifted, and wham. The truck driver saw what I did in the passing lane and had the same idea. Only thing, he never saw me! He hit me square, I never saw him coming. Bike was dragged under the truck ( 1 ton Dodge dually with a fifth wheel on the back, and a car on the fifth wheel) for roughly 30'. The bike came out from under the truck a pile of scrap!
After I got out of the hospital I met the Progressive rep at the dealership with the service manager. The rep looked at the bike and asked the service manager what he thought. Manager said: this thing is totaled. Frames bent, rear wheel is against the transmission and there isn't a place on it that isn't broken or dented. Bags and fairing are junk. It even bent the seat pan.
I asked the adjuster if he rode? He said: I wouldn't own one of these death machines! Anyway, he walked around the bike again, took some photos and asked the manager what the estimate was to fix the bike. Progressive asked for that before we met. The manager told the rep the estimate for complete repair was $14,700. The value of the bike was $15,800. The manager said the bike is totaled in the dealership eyes. He told the rep about me being in first gear with the clutch in when I was hit. He said the motor and transmission were questionable?
The aduster looked at me and said: we will fix the bike. The manager instantly said: you are shittin me right? Nope, I will authorise it to be fixed. The rep then said to me: you will be happy with the bike when you get it back. I told him if they fixed it I wasn't going to take it back. He said: you have to accept the repair.
The argument was on with Progressive. I was hit on Halloween and signed off on the bike in March of the following year. It took that long. I never even started that bike or sat on it. It wasn't even totally fixed before I finally just traded it in on a new bike at the dealership. There was my first and last dealings with Progressive. Each conversation with the rep proved he was an ass. Each time he actually demanded I take the bike back. Demanding, and at times almost insultive. He never considered what the dealership had to say. Many people have had a good outcomesl with Progressive, me, not so much.

in VA if the cost of repairs exceeds 70% of the value of the vehicle it must be totaled.
Most states have similar laws.
It sounds like MI doesn't and the guy took advantage of that.
You should've at least been able to take a check for the amount of the repairs and apply that to a new bike.
In 2009 the wife's car was totaled when a SUV hit her from behind.
I learned some valuable lessons about how to deal with a less than reputable insurance company.

Progressive paid me enough when my 00 Interstate was totalled to get an 01 with only 3000 miles on it and still have enough left over to get my safety chrome rivco air horns, progressive shocks and springs and new jacket No hassle I simply asked the rep when given the number if that was the best he could do. and he did better. I considered the claim experience first rate. That 1st bike had no engine or frame damage just broke every danged piece of plastic on that bike as it flipped
I have full coverage including SUM on both bikes. Fortunately have not had to make a claim in almost 15 yrs

I had Progressive for 12 years, no claims or tickets. Every year I would get a $20.00 or $30.00 premium increase. I told them I would drop them if they did it again. They hit me with another increase so I stuck to my word and dropped them. I signed up with Allstate and told them if they bump my rate like Progressive did I would drop them. After two years I dropped them because of increases for no reason. Next company I signed up with was Markel, just received my renewal and it went down $1.00. Some of you like USAA don't get me started, I've been down that road never again. I've always felt like insurance is a legalized form of extortion.

For those of you in certain states like WI (and others) who own more than 4 cycles total (or recreational vehicles like ATVs), Progressive just upped the maximum onto ONLY one policy to 10 cycles/atvs, etc. vs. 4 as in WI. Thankfully, I called and for 5 cycles onto one policy at 100/300/50 coverage and 100/300 un and underinsured with 1K med payments with 3K accessories, it is near 300 bucks for all 5 cycles per yearly premium if paid in full upfront. Not too bad being 60 bucks per year full coverage on each cycle. I think it went up just a tad since had 3 cycles in 2017 for around 50 bucks per cycle, but not complaining. Progressive has to cancel OLD policy and re-do an entire new policy since finally in WI (and other states) they are allowing more than ONLY 4 cycles/atvs, etc. onto one policy. I might just add liability to one of my ATVs I ride the most since will only be like 30 bucks more per year onto that policy as well just in the rare chance I hit someone while out on the public ATV trails. Just thought I would pass this info. along to those who have more than 4 cycles/atvs. question: I did not add emergency road service/towing onto any of the 5 cycles since I have a trailer I can tow them home with and unless I do LONG trips say overnight, I am usually not more than 3-4 hours away from home and can get my truck/trailer easy enough. Do you all think emergency road service/towing is worth the minimal cost say 10 bucks per cycle per year added onto my policy since I think really not needed since have a trailer to tow them home with and not usually more than 3-4 hours away from home?

I had my bike insurance with Progressive, never a problem but never a claim either.
All other insurance was with State Farm for many years but they kept raising my rates on the cars. Switched to USAA, much cheaper, no claims so far but I like them. Have all of my insurance with USAA now, cars, rental insurance, etc. Qualified as a vet.

That is what AAA Plus is for - takes care of motorcycle as well as RV/ etc.

do not have AAA plus or AAA either.
I figure if I get stuck/stranded somewhere, let it sit, call home, come pick me up, and leave cycle alongside road and bring back the enclosed trailer.

I'm an independent insurance agent in Indiana, and have heard mostly good reports about Progressive. I don't have a contract with them at this point though. I've been selling Medicare products for nearly 10 years, so just now getting my feet wet with auto/home/etc. I would agree most independent agents are going to shop to get you the best deal with the coverage you want. Some will push for extras, so if you get a bad vibe and they won't change their tune, just leave their office and try someone else. Local agents can go up to bat for you if there's a claim, as opposed to attempting an online agent that has no vested interest in your best interest.

all depends, my local insurance agent is not very good and helpful went to get a new quote with him for new policy for 5 cycles and gave him vin# of one and he could not find it and said had to call Progressive. So, I called and did it all myself. Sort of a jerk on the phone as well just stating, 'oh, that is a good deal' B.S.

I tried to go through 3 different independent insurance companies and they all gave me the same quote on 3 vehicles and my bike. Got online with progressive and saved me 70 bucks a month with the same coverage. I don't get it. i'm not paying 70 extra bucks a month just for some guy to represent me in case of a wreck. I'll do that myself.

In regards to what Jess said: I agree all of us shop for the best deal, no matter what it is. But, sometimes things are done on principal. I will pay more for better just on principle. Experience dictates that in my estimation or personal values.
