I travel to Atlanta for the week of May 7, to attend a trade show at the Georgia World Congress Center. Will be my first time in Atlanta ... I understand it can be pretty hectic downtown. Thinking I may not wish to stay at one of the larger hotels designated as "official show accommodation" next to the trade center, I am looking for suggestions of other parts of town a little less busy, but where I could still find a decent place to stay and have at least reasonable access to the show each day, and then possibly be able to take some time to see some non-city sights during the late afternoons/evenings. Or, am I just better off booking one of those downtown hotels and not trying to navigate my way through the city each day. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Mike

I have done quite events there - stay as close as possible. Be aware and careful if on the downtown streets late at night.

I've been too and though Atlanta several times. Just like any large city USA, you do not want to be on the highways any time around commute time. My brother lives around 30 miles north of Atlanta and it sucks there, traffic wise. Very nice area.

How secure will your bike be downtown ? If you follow I-75 north to Platinum Triangle (I-75 / I-285) plenty of hotels, prices, food. Or, follow 400North to Roswell or a little further north to Alpharetta - again you'll find hotels, motels, plus plenty of food choices. DO NOT stay anywhere immediately east, west, or south of downtown....or do so at your own risk.
If most of your time in Atlanta will be over a weekend, traffic will be tolerable.

Stay by the GWCC. As others have mentioned be AWARE. Some parts of the area once you get off a main thoroughfare can be rough. You may encounter a few urban campers. East of the GWCC is OK. Any other direction isn't worth heading to. UBER is your friend in Atlanta. https://www.events12.com/atlanta/may/North on Marietta St are a couple of decent brew pubs and a place called Legal Seafood which has a good reputation.

Thank you for the replies...I am booking my accommodations next week and I guess I will just stay next to the GWCC. I have never lived in or even close to a city (currently 15 minutes outside of the "bustling metropolis" of Agassiz here in BC, pop. 3800), but I do travel to a lot of big cities in the US for work and like to get out and see the surrounding areas when going somewhere new. I will however, heed the much appreciated advice given here. Thx

I once got off the beaten path and lighted areas in New Orleans (French Quarter). Man was that a mistake. Just like swimming... use a buddy system. It's even a good idea when completely sober. I thought the buddy I made in the Quarter was a nice girl, but her real buddy was a guy the size of Shaquille O'Neal, who fell in behind us after about a block. (I was single at the time, and far from completely sober)

Another option to open up more hotels is to take the MARTA train to the GWCC each day. There is ample/cheap parking at the northern train stations and you don't have to deal with the traffic downtown. In BC there may be snow on the ground in May, but Atl will likely be pretty warm, if you walk from the hotel to the GWCC you might arrive moist. Most folks will tell you to ride north into the mountains, but compared to the Canadian Rockies you'll by unimpressed.

but compared to the Canadian Rockies you'll by unimpressed. That's pretty subjective. You can see forever in the craggy unforested steep "newly formed" mountains of the Rockies, but our ancient forest covered rounded-off mountains do it for me. -Mike

Unfortunately I won't have the time to get out on a bike and see the countryside like I did when this show was in Florida last year. All work and no play this time
