Author Topic: Need help getting a hex bolt out of bmw  (Read 727 times)

If anyone has one, its the odd size one just under the left front of the seat that ties the tupperware into the center piece.

Apparently it sits into a nut on the reverse that spins when the bolt spins  

view from sitting next to seat on ground  It is on the top left


I have tried a needle nose vise grip (really thought it would hold while turning the bolt ) without success also tried to get a small mm socket over it but there is no room for it let alone the wrench. Now I am waiting for penetrating liquid to perhaps work  You cant see the nut but I can feel it with my fingers turning and  I was able to take a pic with my google phone but cant get a pic while needle nose is in there

Hate to admit defeat as I have been working this since before the snow fell. If I fail I will have to ride the bike to Mahopac  and get a ride home from an independent shop to be able to change that battery if I cant get the nut and the rest of the tupperware off, and perhaps then need to get the engine guards loose enough to access the battery  oy vey indeed

Guarantee I will not keep the bike until it needs another battery altho it has been a great commuter bike and totally reliable since 2010 and its nice to ride a bike to work almost 100 days a year

After taking the dog for a long walk to clear my head I will give it another shot. WIsh me luck

Have you tried the BMWMOA site? I don't know if they have a tech section or not, but it's a starting point.

Had a eureka moment right after I posted and found my tiny 10mm wrench and got it over the nut and backed that sucker out ...........only to find several more layers of crap that will have to come off including the sending units, air cleaner etc plus the engine guards have to come off and I dont have hex bolts long enough to get in those tight spaces  My bmw manual forgot to mention those engine guards as it is a police model

Thanks for the very quick responses guys but I will do what I should have done in the beginning, go to a mechanic who has done this and has the t shirt after putting those bolts back on the bike.

Also someone backed into my bike and the sidestand is messed up. Fortunately I also have the center stand.  With any luck I should have the bike back by the time the clocks get moved ahead an hour
That coincides with the beginning of my commuting season as I wont ride home rush hour in the dark anymore, not worth the risk.

Well some mechanical "stuff" made by some manufacturers are designed from the outset to be serviced by "factory authorized mechanics"-read cuz da got "special tools"-which in the end results in more money outa yer pocket. I know the beezer a friend of mine had in Japan required British Whitworth tools. The Clubs tool box in Japan had metric B W and American Standard in it. At that time-1966-the honor system in our M/C on base worked rather well. So Evan I'm guessing be lots easier changing out a battery on our Phatt Ghurls?  Roll Eyes If possible would you let us know the final tally on battery change out on the bimmer? RIDE SAFE.

I believe that I would spend the extra $$$ for a Lithium Ion battery.

Well worth the expense if the battery is that much of a PITA to get to.

Not sure about your BMW, but I spent over 2 hours getting to the battery on my FIL's R1100RT. Then we got to take out the battery. It comes out the side on that model. This was a few years ago, so we put in an AGM so we wouldn't have to do this again for a few years. I had to remove enough plastic to make a corvette.  Definitely designed by an engineer that never had to service a motorcycle himself.

Aren't you supposed to get a special charger for the lithium batteries ?

Aren't you supposed to get a special charger for the lithium batteries ?


It seems that the answer to that question is yes.

But they don't seem to be cost prohibitive:

I'm looking to get this battery because of the dual posts.



They should make it very easy to add a fuse block for accessories.

Advance wants an arm and a leg for it, it can be purchased online for much less.
