I will be in San Diego for the next two weeks. I will be renting a H.D. on Feb 26 - 27. (Wish me luck)
Last year I rode Hy74 to Palm Springs and then when to Joshua Tree National Park and back to San Diego great ride. Now I would like to go somewhere else any ideas? Up to Big Bear is one idea. Look for Route 66. Just looking for nice curvy road if anyone wants to join in let me know.

I spent 5 years at March AFB in Riverside/Moreno Valley.  Riding up north from Diego on 15/215, then West on 10 takes you between two mountain ranges (yeah freeway, but the best way to knock out time getting to the good riding).  San Gorgonio Mts and Big Bear to the North, and San Juacinto Mts to the South.  Both are nice rides with a lot of wandering around possible in either direction.

The elevations go up and the temps go down.  These were the only rides in my life where I wore full warm and heavy gear, down to Tshirt and jeans in the same day.  Especially this time of year.

Some cagers will smoke and lose their brakes on those grades (mainly coming down), so watch out for them  (you can smell their brakes).

Why travel far to get some nice road. Take a trip to Julian and ride the roads around there.  Great apple pie and IMHO you can spend a whole day just tooling around that area.  You can head east out of Julian to El Centro through the desert.  Who knows you might catch site of the Blue Angels practicing.  They winter in El Centro.  Salton Sea is the lowest point in the United States.

Or do the Rim of the World Road out of San Bernardino.  Angeles Crest and Angeles Forest Road are outstanding.  If you start in La Canada / Flintridge. on Angeles Crest and head up the mountain, when you hit the rest area make a left hand turn and that becomes  Angeles Forest Road.  Take that to 14.  At the bottom of the hill is or was a restraint / bar called Vincent on the Grade (right near the RV Place.  You can go high on Angeles Crest all the way to Wrightwood but I would watch for snow this time of year.  That is the reason for turning on Angeles Forest road (use to ride this daily from Burbank when I was working on a power plant project).

If you ride this once you'll just want to turn around and ride it right back up again.  But, if it was me I would do the Julian / El Centro back to Temecula ( Hwy 79) or Escondido (Hwy 78).  Hwy 371 of Hwy 79 will take you to Palm Desert.  More curves and less slab.  I'd do Hwy 74 all day long if I had the time. Crotch Rocket country. (I did an aircraft crash investigation up there in the 70's and was stationed at Camp Pendleton for 8 years).

But that is my humble $0.02.

Head up to Julian which is about an hour west of San Diego. The roads up there are heaven. Especially Hwy 78 East.

Watch out for deer in there though. Nearly got a couple back in ‘79.

Uhh?  Isn't an hour west of S.D. in deep Pacific waters?   Shocked

Eeeeekkkkk! "Go west, it's better out there!" But in this instance Willow is correct. Julian is indeed East of S.D.  Embarrassed

I have done this trip a couple of times.  It is a fun ride plus you get to stop at the Julian Pie shop for great Apple pie & coffee.
