Hey all

Wanted ask ya all if anyone has ever tried an M-16/ 5.56 vrs a windshield and what the results were

My buddy is a soldier and tells me they would have to use bigger weapons cause the M-16 wouldn’t do it

So I figured I’d ask ya all

Thank you in advance

Been tested lots.  Certainly deflects a bit (amoout depends on range and angle of incidence), but they can dang sure penetrate the windshield and still kill.

Your buddy may need to go back to boot camp.  What are they teaching the recruits these days?

The mixed results of 5.56 on vehicles (Windshields, doors, etc) against incoming terrorists was one of the issues that prompted the development of the .50 Beowulf.

The .50 Beowulf, which is usually fired from an AR-15 or M-16/M4 platform, has no problems at ALL penetrating windshields, doors, engine blocks, whatever... Smiley

Given sufficient angle and a hard surface and a sharp point bullet deflection is a given. Simply physics at work.

Hit it at the right angle and water is bullet proof... Yup...

I remember being taught in Basic Training that the M-16 round was a "Tumbler" round (think wobbly pass instead of a perfect spiral).

So, it could easily depend on where it was in its tumble when it struck the windshield.

Also the M-16 round has alot of velocity but little weight, which gives it less energy than many standard hunting rounds.

"Tumbler" is a bit misleading.  Thing of the rotation not being completely in line.  That is that the nose holds a spiral in a line but the tail rotates wider as it's a little off center weight wise.  The tumbling begins when the nose hits something solid.  That's what causes the round to do the damage it does.  It is a light weight bullet.

If the bullet tumbled in flight it would leave "keyhole" shaped holes in paper targets. Not to mention accuracy would suffer greatly.

In the early days of the AR15 the barrel twist was 1 turn in 12 inches. Because of that slow twist the standard bullet could and did de-stabilize way to easy.

That was changed in later models to 1 in 9, 1 in 8 and 1 in 7 to stop the de-stabilization and to stabilize heavier bullets for more penetration.

With modern AR15's there are no real stabilization issues until you approach 90 grains in bullet weight using a 1 in 7 twist. Slower twist barrels introduce this issue with lighter 70 to 80 grain bullets.

The M855 steel core will punch through more than just windshields.

It seems to me that the 7.62x39 would be a more efficient all around cartridge than the 5.56. A heavier 123 grain bullet with about the same bulk for carrying and effective range but in the AR-15 platform which is more accurate than AK or SKS.
Is that why the Beowolf?  Yeah, From what I heard, the 7.62 round didn't work very well in a Ar-15 platform because of the rimmed cartridge and curved magazine.  Don't mind me, I'm not an expert on the Ar-15. I don't own one but have its entirely different cheaper cousin the AR-7.

I heard that the M14/M1A  was favored more for urban fighting because of its ability to penetrate concrete blocks.

The 7.62 round for the AK & SKS (7.62x39) is not a rimmed cartridge.  The body is tapered a bit, hence the much more curved magazines, but no rim.  You are correct- increased bullet weight is the reason for the Beowulf.  Also, not just the M14 (7.62x51 AKA 7.62 NATO), but also the 7.62x39 penetrate concrete blocks and other medium better than the 5.56.

Was that throwing the weapon at the windshield or shooting it?
