I'm not a big fan of Facebook, although I have an account.

Usually only go there, when someone here, does a link to something interesting.

Anyways, someone there (FB) stated the timing belts NEED to be replaced every 10 years AND stated there have been many cases of the belts breaking in a Valk, causing major damage due to the interference.

I think the replacement every 10 years is a Gates thing.

I've heard of belts going on the older generation Wings, but I've never heard of that happening on a Valk.

Anyone ever heard of one?

There was a report of Kendall's (I think) breaking and ruining the engine. But that's just second hand info.

I like facebook,, but you just have to take most of what is said with a grain of salt. If you get easily offended by false info and opinionated folks who will get in your face and you cannot take it,, DO NOT get on facebook. I enjoy a challenge  ;)

That is why i am not on there. Would tell too many people to F off. I would like to tell some on here that but the rules of the road prevent me from doing that. And plus i'm not as low as some either.

That's OK Gavin. I'm on Facebook. One of my few liberal friends called me a stupid racist because I voted for Trump. I told him F@#& off. We are no longer friends. My own cousin from Jersey called me a (derogatory term for someone from the midwest) so we are no longer friends.  I like Facebook because it allows me to stay connected with friends and family that live in other cities and states.

But it is not for everyone.

Wild guess .. More than 7 Valkyrie boards on FB.. I didn't do a count but I'm on at least that many Valkyrie related pages.

The 10 year thing started years ago when auto engineers started using the same cam drive technology in auto engines.

The 10 year and  xxxxx mileage recommendations were part of that introduction.

There have been some failures, mileage, age and defect related on vehicles using belt driven cam drives.

But I have not seen that 10 years or xxxxx miles is a magic failure gonna happen guide.

It is probably more important to inspect occasionally for age/use related cracks or liquid contamination or material seperation than a specific age or mileage replacement plan.

Thanks for the info Pete :cooldude:

I've replaced the ones on my Tourer with 116K at around 75K, didn't need too, just thought it prudent.

Obviously, all Valks have belts over 10 years old if still OEM.

I was just interested if anyone has lunched the motor from broken belts?

I can't remember hearing about it happening on a Valkyrie.

Ken aka Oil Burner

I've been a Toyota auto tech for quite awhile. Their timing belts are produced by Aisin, which produces for many manufacturers. I don't know if the factory belt on a Valk is from Aisin or not, but here's my thoughts. A few years back, Toyota's recommendation on T-belt replacement was 72 months or 90,000 miles. They updated it to 108 months or 90K, whichever comes first. So, 9 years is their magic number as far as dry cracking or age-related material fatigue is concerned. That said, I've done frame replacements on early Tundras for landscaping/construction/roofing companies with 3-400K that are on the original belt. Obviously, I recommended replacement, but most decline, saying that if it breaks, they'll just get another truck. I've personally seen very few actual belt failures on Toyotas, and most were caused by a failure of another component in the system, like a tensioner or the water pump failing.

For me, I replaced my Tundras belt and water pump at 120K. The old one looked pretty good, with no sign of tooth separation or dry cracking. I feel it's good insurance anyway. If it were to break or shear teeth off, it could be very expensive to repair. Also, I'd rather replace it in my driveway that have it fail a few hundred miles from home on a ride.

Valk belts are made in Germany by gates.I don't think there is another plant making them anywhere.
all modern tbelts are made with kevlar fiber and can go amazing distances if they aren't contaminated.
I'll keep doing mine every 90-100k just for peace of mind.
the last set I bought at NAPA were 20.00 each and said gates Germany right on the box.
