Just the market at work. When there is a rumor of oil prices going up, the price of gas goes up. When there is a rumor of banning Canadian cattle, the price of ground beef goes up. The market is betting he will impose tariffs. I think it's possible he might back down though.

If the market was left alone, it would work. Want something screwed up, just have the govt get involved.

Tariffs are just taxes on imports. Taxes are bad. This is a bad thing.

What about national security? What is it worth to have some steel and aluminum produced here, rather than so much imported? It's worth something to me.

Think of WWII. If we hadn't had our own massive steel Mills, would we have been able to produce guns, tanks, trucks, Jeep's, etc like we did?

I agree. I think he would have been wiser to propose specific tariffs against the Chinese and others who are dumping product. To make it unilateral against our Canadian and European allies seems ill advised.

Another plus 1.  How is a 800 billion trade deficit a good thing?  How is it we bring products into this country at no cost and every other country imposes a 12 to 144 percent tariff on every product we ship overseas.  That is not free trade that is being fleeced big time.  All Trump is calling for is fair trade and that should have always been the motto for trade.  Why does Canada's price of a metric bike or Harley cost so much more than in the states?   
I really think it is a Nafta negotiating ploy right now, but I do know the man was serious about it and was a big part of his campaign when no one else had the balls to go there.

The Nafta agreement is being dangled in front of countries to negotiate a better deal and when in effect it will be a much better place and deal for the US than the previous admin had in giving everything away.

Agreed regarding NAFTA, but it's a good ploy to not have anything off the table. It's important to shake up the planet to the fact that there's a new sheriff in town and the welcome mat has to be a two-way street. The thing right now is some folks are so consumed with blind hate for Trump that they can't even see straight. Trump can make all the noise he wants about tariffs, but he knows they can be erased as fast as drawn, and so do those who have resisted treating us the way we treat them. The last guy wasn't interested in anything but making folks who don't work comfortable.

I would not get too excited about anything Tammy (Karl) Baldwin proposed since I would guess this may be the first piece of legislation she has proposed in the last 5 years and should require careful vetting. I am not sure where the polls are on her chances in November, but without a ticket leader, I hope she is in trouble. Consider that even the Doyle (Banana) Republic canned her and upon whose coat-tails she rode to office. I am positive she has never seen a tax increase she doesn't approve of.
