Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: March 07, 2018, 06:42:53 AM »

I just love that very special feeling! I get stuck in a place for a night or two, then I finally load up and throw a leg over our girl, and… varoom! Off we go… It usually doesn’t even take until we clear the motel parking lot before I’m already feeling it!!! Truth be told, the loading up is actually like foreplay for us!

She is so wonderful to handle, maneuver, bank, turn, scoot around large rigs, and otherwise simply be in motion… We’ve been together so long now, that it’s like smiling or blinking in that virtually no conscious effort is required… ‘our parts’ just automatically know what to do, and things smoothly happen…

Each new day is different from the last, but there is at least some consistency: Each new day, for example, instantly produces that indescribable, incredible, euphoric feeling of joy; and, some degree of disbelief that this is all really happening…

WOW! I am so happy to be out here, doing what we do, truly living a dream! I often shake my head and smile, as I marvel at all the unexpected, seemingly unbelievable events in their curious, improbable sequence that have happened to bring us to this point…

The adjustment to this style of travel and life hasn’t been as effortless as bonding with our girl has, however… Nope, there have been many lessons to learn, concepts to alter, some even to jettison, and new ones to discover, embrace, and adopt. To do what we do would probably drive ‘type A’ personalities to the brink! I know it didn’t come all that easily for yours truly either, but it has made a tremendous difference…

Please indulge me a small distraction here… Thunderbolt deserves special thanks, and I do want to offer my good tidings to him… As I made my way to the outside motel room door the other morning, I paused and thought about what he had said in a previous post…

I stopped long enough to extract a metal key from my pocket, and… holding it firmly, I touched it to the door knob… WOW! A visible spark! Since we’d returned to colder weather, those annoying, pesky, unanticipated, foul language producing, little shocks had also returned… Not this time!!! Thanks, Terry! That little procedure is now standard practice!!!

OK, back to my other point… We’d departed the motel in Benson, AZ, thinking we’d just scoot on down through Tombstone, then wind-up over in Sierra Vista… Nope, instead of making the turn west in Bisbee, we rode southeast to Douglas instead! I’d come up with an entirely new thought by then on how we’d do some loop-de-loos; naturally, with a keen weather-eye out at all times…

A brief spat of cold weather precip was called for soon in the high country, so we had to stay clear of that stuff. There were some roads I’d seen on my atlas, though, that either hadn’t been ridden by us, or hadn’t been ridden in several years…

By making a couple of ‘tweaks’ here and there, I came up with a new 'plan', ‘on the fly’, that would keep us at lower altitudes for a couple of days, take us on some ‘scenic routes’, and position us to ‘move up’ when the temps had risen a bit and that nasty moisture had moved on eastward.

I was actually thinking of stopping for the night again in Deming, NM, but when we arrived in Lordsburg needing fuel… well, you know… we altered our plan again… Not right away, though.

Nope, first I went in a restaurant across the street for some people fuel and had a very enjoyable meal, served by a very nice, efficient lady with a friendly smile and pleasant manner... spotting a real pro ain't hard at all! It wasn’t until I’d finished that refreshing pause and left the restaurant walking towards ALI, that possibilities started to emerge…

Yep, directly across the street and next door to that convenience/gas store was a motel that appeared suitable… Now, anytime I find a set-up like this, the wheels automatically start to turn… A convenience store and restaurant all within easy walking distance… and a McDs a block and a half down the road…

No lounge nearby that I knew of, but… Contrary to common thought, I don’t frequent those places nearly as much as I once did… So, no biggie there, and not really even a consideration these days.

We rode over and got a room… That motel didn’t have a guest laundry, doggonit, and I was in dire need of that! The check-in lady told me when I inquired, that they did provide a ‘laundry service’, however… Well, clean clothing was the objective, so… not actually having to perform the chore myself was considered a bonus, not a detriment! Things just seemed to be working out fine! And, nothing at all like what I’d been thinking when this day had begun, but…

Well, time to depart again following an easy stay, that would have been better had I been able to access the WIFI. The temps seemed really pleasant and mild… in the sunlight, in the lee of the motel structure anyway… and, the sky was nearly completely void of clouds. I had mostly back roads for the first part of the day in mind, and our prospects appeared near perfect as we headed out of town…

Yep, I had another goober-grin plastered all over my face as we went through the gears and got up to speed… Nothing hard, fortuitously, as I spotted a ‘stealth LEO’ looking for business while we were accelerating… I imagined a scowl of disappointment on his face… as he reflexively grabbed another donut. Heck, we hadn’t even missed any of the turns required to find our way out of town! Oh, that special feeling was really kicking in!!!

Bruce,

I really do enjoy reading your posts.

I like your writing style it's uniquely you.

And I think that it's great you are now sharing pics with us of the places that you've been.

But, after reading this:

Serk,

Thank you! I've been meaning to reply to your post about your big adventure... I just haven't gotten around to it... Anyway, all things in their own time, my friend, and you appear to me to be living a rather interesting, and rewarding, life yourself!

I love doing what we do, and I also enjoy trying to capture in words and photos what all is going on... and to give some sense of the thrill of it all. This is the 'dessert' of life... you are still laying a foundation, meeting obligations, building a data base for all that will follow... in due course. Now is the 'main course' of life for you, but all of this awaits you... when it is time... I look forward to comparing notes one of these days...

Mark,

Thanks for your feedback and compliment. I unashamedly admit that I am living a dream! I'm mighty proud to be here, and I am most grateful to my Maker for answering my prayers just the way He has!!! This truly is special... and it is a pleasure to share my wonderful experiences with kindred spirits.

It's wonderful that in your long retirement you have found a purpose in visiting here and there in this great land and equally terrific that you have this wonderful family who is glad to help you at every twist and turn and read and enjoy your posts.

For sure it was not your intent but you are a true soul of this club.

Kind of reminds me of the scenes in Forest Gump where he is just running across the country, gets to the ocean, runs the other way and hundreds are running behind and following his adventures

So I cheerfully admit that I totally, completely, and eagerly await the next installment of the "Adventures of DDT and his Girl"

Keep em coming and savor the moments as they come.

"While it's all beautiful to me, much of the scenery won't win any photo contests..."

It's all about perspective....Whenever I've ventured out of BC into the Canadian prairies or through middle America, I find the drastic difference in scenery exhilarating...endless fields of wheat or canola, desert, and wide open spaces and different rock formations, etc offer up a different kind of "beauty" to this lifelong BC boy used to peaks, valleys, lakes, and forests. One of my best days in recent memory was on my ride back from Morgantown a couple years ago...15 hours in the saddle solo, through the middle of ND, MT through what I referred to as  "the Great Nothingness of Montana" in the facebook blog I did for my family of that ride. Whether it was counting roadkill, clicking photos of the sky or endless ribbon of perfectly straight road that disappeared into the distance, or just listening to the wind and just taking in the unbelievable vastness and solitude of my surroundings most of that day....it was indeed "Beautiful" and certainly photo-worthy.

To live that experience every day must be something to behold....sure appreciate you continuing to share it with the rest of us Bruce  cooldude

Bruce,
What a feeling!  Indeed it is!  I enjoy just getting to read about it when you, or some of the other wandering spirits in this group, are enjoying it.

For me, it is great just to be on my Valk moving asphalt under the wheels.  That feeling is redoubled when I have no time constraint and no particular place to go but rather a kinda sorta maybe that general direction in mind.

That open pit mine is the Lavender Pit Copper mine.  Its the mine that ate Lowell AZ.  Lowell was settled in the 1880s.  By the 1950s, the mine had consumed so much of the town, that it was no longer viable and was abandoned.  It sat abandoned for decades and finally a group from Bisbee began fixing up Erie street, one of the few remaining streets from the commercial district.  They lined the street with cars from the era and fixed up many of the store fronts so that it now looks similar to what it looked like back in the 50's.

This is the mine today.  If you look at the rim at the top of the mine all the way to the left, you can just make out the building in the second picture which is the beginning of Erie Street.

3fan,

Either you went back and added this, or I just missed it before, but...   Shocked

"I am thoroughly convinced that you desperately need to get laid."

Well, what can I say... I'm not one to focus on such things in my writings, but I will confirm that one of the very few down-sides to my chosen lifestyle and direction is that I do indeed suffer from chronic involuntary celibacy! Solitude is blissful in many ways... but it does have an obvious shortcoming or two! Be advised if you ever consider doing this yourself!!!   coolsmiley

DDT

Wizzard,

Thank you! It is my genuine pleasure... You know exactly how that is, though, and I know this because you do the same thing for the same reason!   coolsmiley

DDT

Oss,

WOW! Those are really wonderful things you've said, my good friend, and I do appreciate your comments very much!!! You know me well enough to also know that I'm just an ordinary guy who has been blessed in an extraordinary way! It is very gratifying that many on here claim to enjoy sharing my journey... If it were not so, I would continue to write about this amazing experiment in personal growth, but I just would not post anything... I must admit it feels really great to read nice things being said about all of this...   cooldude

DDT

Rob,

I'd wear it, too! Ummm, since most of my riding is done in cooler temps, might be best to go with a four X or larger size, so it could be worn over my leather jacket! Nice idea, though...   Smiley

DDT

Mike,

Indeed it is a matter of perspective!!! Like you, I enjoy it all, but also like you, I really, really enjoy the things that differ from the familiar to me! Part of the magic of wandering all over the place is getting to see such different and incredible stuff!!! You already know that, of course, I'm just agreeing with you!!! Thanks for your always nice replies!   cooldude

DDT

Alpha,

Yeah, the 'set' to that movie looked unfamiliar to this observer, too! Oh well, Hollywood sees things differently than this gypsy on several fronts, so no big surprise for me...   angel

DDT

Jerry,

As we've both acknowledged many times, we do see many things the same... Yes, you are a kindred spirit, and the way you express your own thoughts tells me much about you! All good, by the way!   Cool

DDT

RP,

Great additional info on that location! Thanks for providing it... The changes to the west, and our entire continent for that matter, is an amazing story about us as a species, our changing priorities, and our growth in terms of culture, 'national values', and awareness of our impact on our world around us. All fascinating stuff, and your contribution to that story is much appreciated!   Smiley

Bruce,

It was in the original post.

I figured that you were just ignoring my little jest.

I have considered that particular potential drawback of life on the road.

The wife isn't opposed to extended travel but she isn't ready to become a full time gypsy.

Craigslist is full of opportunities for companionship.

None that a married guy should be taking advantage of, especially if he wants to stay married.

That's an interesting story.

It's even more interesting how they restored part of the town.

I immediately thought that a couple of those pics would look good in HDR:

Mark,

I'm going to be careful how I dance around this whole subject! Anyway, I did miss your 'little jest' when I first read your reply...  I try not to ignore anything, but sometimes I do let tact and diplomacy (and the threat of intervention by Willow) lead me to employ 'creative avoidance' now and then!  lol  And now, like Forrest Gump said, "That's all I have to say about that..."   Grin

Interesting enhancements to RP's photos... I like both ways of viewing them... Yours are definitely eye-catching and, to me anyway, thought-provoking. His are more 'real' and good for grasping the true nature and essence of the scene. Nice inclusion, yours complement his, thanks!

Bruce,, one thing I have learned in my 63 years on earth about that first subject. Those who have it don't talk about it,, those who make the most noise about it probably have little.  Wink

Glad I was able to provide a solution to that problem.  I actually picked it up from someone else but it worked so well for me I felt I should pass it on.  We are camping in Nashville with 3 other couples each in our own 5th wheel.  We had a light dusting of snow this morning.  Going to make our first ever visit to the Ryman Auditorium tonight.  Still doing some touring albeit on 4 wheels now instead of 2.

Wiz,

Yep, pretty accurate observation! Those who have to announce things about themselves often are really just expressing their own disappointments. They feel a need to bolster their image, because they don't want others to know what they know about themselves... As for me, I just don't kiss and tell! (Not that I ever kiss...  coolsmiley )

DDT

Terry,

I'm happy you and Iris have found your path to enjoyment of your retirement! My observation has been that retirement is not all about stopping work. Nor, is it about sitting down and letting ourselves atrophy. When I retired, I didn't just go away from work, I moved on to new activities... I have fond myself 'in front of a TV' on several occasions, but I did not like what I discovered was happening to my body and mind... Being out and about is a great way for some of us to remain vital and in good spirits... Appears y'all have 'hit your stride'! Good on ya... Oh, and yeah, I'm still using that key! Thx again!!!

Hey hubcap,

Here is another mine/motocross track to drool over! The Morneci mine, also in Arizona... In the first pic, if you look closely, there is a black dot down in the bottom of that 'excavation'... it is a truck... The trucks they use to haul stuff out with use tires like the one in the second photo!

The very same! That's a truly amazing tire... it should end the tire debate on 'Darkside', huh? That 'hole in the ground' is something to ponder, also, isn't it...? Our girl and I have been retracing several of the roads we've ridden in years past, and I've thought of you all daily! Wish y'all were here, but... since you can't be, I'm doing the best I can...
